Notes from Our Team

ELA (Ms. O'Brien & Mrs. Childress)

Ms. O’Brien’s Syllabus: HERE

Mrs. Childress’ Syllabus: HERE

From Ms. O'Brien:

This week and next in ELA, we will be finishing our creative writing unit. Students will have the opportunity to write their own narrative, in any genre. We have been working on things like plotting and beginning a story, dialogue, and general story elements. I am excited to see what students come up with!

The final reading log for this school year is due Monday, May 13th by 11:59pm.

Students will turn in their Chromebooks for the year on Friday, May 17th. Because of this, the deadline for all assignments is Friday, May 17th at 11:59pm. Please make sure that your students are checking for missing assignments in SIS and Canvas.

I want to take a moment to thank each and every Bravery family for your hard work and support this school year. The transition to middle school can be a difficult one, but we have all grown so much as readers and writers this year. I am excited to see what they will accomplish in 7th grade!

Have an amazing summer, and don’t forget to read!!!

Please feel free to reach out with questions and concerns on Canvas or by email at obrien.megan@wgmail.org

From Mrs. Childress (Period 1, 7, & 8):

This week in ELA students are finishing up their final novels. There will be both a test over the book and a CER about the theme of the book. These will both be summative scores.

As we close out the year, students will be doing some narrative writing based on short stories we'll be reading in the novel Boy, Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl. This will be done in their writing notebooks.

Student chromebook collection will be Friday May 17th. Please be sure to remind students to check SIS for any missing assignments as the 17th will be the last day we have access to them.

This is our last newsletter for the year. Thank you for a great school year and enjoy your summer vacations!

Please do not hesitate to reach out and email me at any time: childress.mollie@wgmail.org

Science (Mrs. Meyer)

Mrs. Meyer’s Syllabus: HERE

From Mrs. Meyer:

This week we finished our unit on Internal & External Processes with our unit test and notebook grades. These are both summative scores.

We will work on our EcoBottle summaries and presentations starting next week. Students will examine the EcoBottles that they built in December and apply concepts that they have learned this year in science to analyze how successful the system that they designed has been. The EcoBottle presentation will take us to the last week of the year. This will be a group grade, so students will need to be actively engaged during class time to get all work done and to earn credit towards the final summative grade for the group presentation.

Because our chromebooks will be turned in on Friday, May 17th, all assignments, including work on the EcoBottle presentations and any other missing assignments, must be completed and turned in on this date. Please check Canvas and SIS with your student to make sure everything is done.

Thank you for a wonderful year! The students have worked hard and learned so much in this first year of middle school. It has been exciting to watch them become more confident and successful through the year.

Have a great summer!

American History (Mr. Lopez)

Mr. Lopez’s Syllabus: HERE

From Mr. Lopez:

This week in Socials Studies, students put the finishing touches on their 1920s Museum Projects and several kids volunteered to present their research to their classmates. This wasn’t a requirement but it brought a nice culmination to the project.

Next, we’ll be studying the Great Depression. On Friday, 5/10, students will be introduced to Lesson 2: Causes of the Great Depression. In this activity, students will watch a video, read a short history of the Great Depression and use this information to create a Facebook page for President Herbert Hoover, showcasing what they’ve learned.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me: lopez.patrick@wgmail.org

Math (Mrs.Gulve)

Mrs. Gulve's Syllabus: HERE

From Mrs. Gulve:

This week in math class we continued our work on creating and analyzing box plots. Students participated in a “Clue” game where they found alibis and determined who committed the crime.

At the end of the week, students were introduced to their data project. Students brainstormed and chose two statistical questions, one numerical and one categorical. They then collected data by interviewing each member of their class. Next week we will analyze this data by finding the measures of center and creating several different visual representations.

At the end of next week, students will complete a mini project called the Zombie Project. Students will act as doctors and analyze viruses caused by a zombie apocalypse.

The last day to turn in work is Monday, May 20th. All grades will be finalized Tuesday morning. Please check your child’s grade in Canvas or Tyler SIS. They can retake any test from this Quarter or redo any project to improve their grade.

If you would like 6th or 7th grade math practice over the summer, here is a link that the school district provides. I also have 6th grade workbooks available for you to keep. If you would like one, I am happy to give one to your child. I have plenty, so don’t hesitate to ask if you think your child might benefit from this resource.

Have a great week! Let’s finish out this school year strong!
