The Pure Joy of Fall
There have been a lot of events at school. The Haunted House Obstacle Course in the gym, the Halloween Parade, a raptor presentation that included an owl, Game Night hosted by the PTO, and field trips to Saint Gaudens and the Hood Museum. I am proud to say that our students have received a lot of compliments from staff that work at the field trip venues. Our students were noticed for being kind, polite, and asking thoughtful questions!
So proud,
Leah Wheelan, Principal

No School on Nov. 10 and Nov. 22-24
Just a reminder that this Friday is Veterans' Day so we have no school. The Thanksgiving Break is from Nov. 22nd to Nov. 24th.
Greetings from the Student Support Center (SSC)
This year, SSC and Hanover Street School are instituting a school-wide community booster called the DOT! program. DOT! stands for Doing Outstanding Things. Each time a community member is seen going above and beyond for a peer, a teacher, a younger student, or the school environment, a colorful dot is placed in a random spot in the school celebrating the kindness being spread.
Emails will be sent to parents to let you know that your student is being celebrated for their kindness and contribution to the community. Sometimes these moments are quick and a staff member doesn't get the chance to mention the good deed in the moment, but the email will celebrate the type of Outstanding Thing your student did. Everyone at HSS is excited to see the halls fill with the colors of community kindness! SSC will update DOT! progress throughout the year, so look for us in future newsletters!
With gratitude,
Amy M. Marcoux, M.Ed.(she, her)

Note on the Birthday Silly Straws
Just a note that if you child brings home a silly straw for their birthday gift from HSS, they are NOT dishwasher safe.
Interesting Book
I have been reading a very informative book called "Of Boys and Men" by Richard Reeves. It is full of statistics that provide a clearer picture of what is happening to boys in our society. I don't agree with everything in the book, but it's a thought provoking read, especially for parents and people connected to education or public policy. Here's a link to an Opinion piece by David Brooks in the NYTimes.
News from the Nurse
Vision Screening
The Lion’s Club will be coming to HSS on November 9 to help us complete vision screenings on all students. This is a non - invasive technique that helps identify children who may need further vision evaluation. Should your child need additional evaluation, I will send home a notice. The Lion’s Club also provides financial assistance for vision appointments and eyeglasses, so please reach out to me if you have questions or concerns. We are so grateful for the help and time from the Lebanon Lion’s Club.
Lice
Head lice is very common among school - aged children. There is no need to exclude children from school should they have head lice. However, diligent treatment is imperative in order to completely get rid of head lice. Please see the article from the Mayo Clinic for information and guidance:

OTC Medications at School
Our medication permission forms can be completed on the computer or cell phone through the ALMA program. Prior to the start of school all parents were sent a link to this program through the main office. If you did not create an account then, you may not be able to sign into this program. In order to complete the medical portion of the program you may need to call the main office. Thank you for your help.
On another note, I always contact parents when a child gets medication at school.
Concussions
Although I don’t see a lot of students with concussions at the elementary school level, a concussion can happen anytime, anywhere. If your child falls, hits his or her head on the ground, against an object or collides with someone else, it is important to watch for signs and symptoms of a concussion. Always contact your child’s doctor with questions or concerns, and please let the school nurse know if your child does have a concussion.
Here is an article from the American Academy of Pediatrics: https://www.aap.org/en/patient-care/concussion/
Should you have any questions about your child’s health, please contact me.
Be Well,
