I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your support and contributions to our school community. Because of each of you, our school continues to thrive as a place of learning, growth, and connection.
I regret not being at school this week, but please know that I wish you a restful and joyful break. This is a time to reflect on what we are grateful for, spend quality time with family and friends, and recharge for the return to school.
I also encourage students to use this break to review their progress and work on any missing assignments. Schoology is a great resource to check on your student's coursework. Completing all assignments will set students up for a strong finish to the semester.
Thank you for all that you do to make our school community so special.
Have a safe and happy holiday break!
Sincerely,
Irma Muñoz Daniels
Principal
Classes Resume on 12/2/24
We are excited to welcome everyone back when classes resume on Monday, December 2, 2024.
As we gear up for the remainder of the semester, let’s refocus on our goals, prepare for upcoming activities, and make the most of the time ahead.
A Message from Your Counselors
At this time of the year, and in the quiet moments of my day, I try to focus on what’s working well in my life. And before the rainstorm kicks us into a atmospheric river, I am grateful for sweater weather, for the opportunities to work with students on their college essays, allowing me a glimpse into who they are and what they hope for their futures, and I’m grateful for my friends and family. I hope that next week will give you pause to reflect on what is important in your life and give you an opportunity to celebrate these moments with those who fill your cup. During school breaks I unplug and do not check work emails, texts or voicemails. This is the only way I can return, feeling like I took an actual break from work. I hope you can do the same. Please reach out to me on Monday, December 2nd, when we return from break. Thank you.
Students: When we return from break we have 3 weeks left of the semester, with the last week being Finals Week. This is YOUR LAST opportunity to turn in work to earn full credit (total of 5). If you are short credit, you will remediate the class via Accelerate, our online program, when we get back from Winter Break. If you are a student athlete with dreams of playing in college, you MUST earn your credit in class, not through Accelerate (this is UC/CSU and graduation approved but NOT for NCAA). Use your time over break to get the work done.
CSU and UC Application Deadline: DECEMBER 2, 2024.
While we return to school on this day, it would be in students’ best interest to submit their applications over break and not wait until the December 2nd deadline. CSU and UC reps warn that expect a surge in application submissions on this day and this may cause computer glitches. Students do not need the added stress of a computer glitch on December 2nd when submitting applications.
We had two evening events last week, Community College Night and Financial Aid Night. Thank you to all the students and families who braved the weather to attend. Both speakers, Julian Solis from The College of Alameda, and Devan McFadden, Program Manager with East Bay Solano County Consortium/Cal-SOAP shared their presentations with us. Please take some time to review both slide decks as they provide important information for students and families. In addition to Juilan we were lucky enough to have Matthew Goldstein, a PHS parent/resident, add his experience of the Peralta Community College experience/opportunities; he is in the COA Humanities Department and has offered his email contact if any parents/students have questions about the Peralta College (Laney, College of Alameda, Merritt, and Berkeley City).
FAFSA
FAFSA has officially opened, earlier than its expected opening on December 2, 2024. Hopefully you will have attended the Financial Aid presentation and will be well equipped to fill out the FAFSA over break. Please make sure the student and parent(s)/guardian(s) (aka Contributors) have their IDs created. Here are a couple of videos to watch that can help you walk through the process:
Why do my contributors and I need our own student.aid gov accounts for the FAFSA form?
CSS
CSS For those using the CSS Profile (College Board), here is a link to the institutions utilizing the CSS profile.
It is important to fill out FAFSA and, for private colleges, CSS Profile, as Merit money may be tied to these.

The Giving Campaign
The Piedmont Education Foundation (PEF) has launched an exciting participation challenge as part of this year’s Giving Campaign! Our goal is to raise $4 million, and this year, every family’s participation counts toward something special. If we reach 75% participation from Piedmont Unified School District families, the entire town will celebrate with a community-wide pajama day!
Watch the Giving Meter in the center of town to track our progress. Imagine our entire community in PJs, celebrating our united support for our schools. PEF encourages everyone to contribute, no matter the amount. Let’s come together to make a positive impact and show our commitment to education.
Stay Updated:

East Bay Children's Book Project @ Turkey Trot 11/27
Do you have children's books to pass on? The mission of East Bay Children's Book Project (EBCBP) is to help build literacy by putting books into the hands of children who have little or no access to them. Working through individuals and organizations who help children in need, the organization has given out more than two million free books since opening their doors in May 2005.
What: new and gently used children’s books, including board books through high school books. Books should be clean with no marks or stains. No textbooks, religious books, encyclopedias, magazines, adult books, or library discards.
Monetary donations can be accepted by mail at 2501 Harrison St., Oakland, CA 94612 or online at https://www.eastbaychildrensbookproject.org/donate-now/
When/Where:
- Turkey Trot bib pick up on Wed Nov 27 3-6pm at Veterans' Hall,
- During school hours in the EBCBP box at Piedmont Middle School library,
- Tuesdays 3:30-5:30pm at EBCBP, 2501 Harrison St., Oakland (across from Whole Foods)
Why: Too many children in the Bay Area do not have books, and attend schools and programs where books are in short supply. Encouraging reading is not enough when families and schools do not have books. Books are given directly to children in need by teachers, social workers, health care professionals, community outreach groups, housing authority employees, and police officers. Some are used by schools, daycare and community centers, homeless shelters, and hospitals to create libraries at their sites.
