Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,
On Wednesday, Rick Marcotte Central School celebrated the Grand Opening of ZEMs! Principal Lissa McDonald, RMCS PTO and fifth-grade teachers rolled out the red carpet for the students to enter the classrooms for the first time. Even Marky the Moose was there!
Four RMCS fifth graders cut a red ribbon with giant scissors to celebrate the momentous occasion of the ZEMs grand opening before students entered their new classrooms. The students and crowd were brimming with excitement. Some of these photos are a little blurry because they were moving so quickly to see everything the space has to offer!
Thank you to the Rick Marcotte PTO for helping to organize this ribbon cutting and all the families who came to celebrate with our students and staff. Thank you to the enrollment committee who brought the proposal for the ZEMs, to Tim Jarvis, Senior Director of Operations and Finance for overseeing the project, Dore + Whittier who designed the ZEMs, DEW Construction, and all the staff at Rick Marcotte for your patience and flexibility during construction. Finally thank you to our Board and to our community for supporting this project.

Staff Spotlight: Lisa Post
Congratulations to Lisa Post, who received the VT PBIS Sherry Schoenberg Leadership Award at the Annual Forum last week! Lisa has been Chamberlin’s PBiS champion for seven years at GCS. She is instrumental in keeping their PBiS systems running smoothly and always brings new learning and fun to our school. She coordinates all of the Social Emotional Learning Multi-Tiered Systems of Support layered supports at the school in collaboration with our SEL coaches. Lisa supports PBiS in our district by collaborating with our district team. One of her biggest accomplishments is making sure that we are using an equity lens with all of our PBiS systems.
She is the queen of SWIS, the data system for referrals, and helps use the data to make informed and supportive decisions. Along with keeping our systems going, she offers targeted supports for small groups in music, yoga, movement and even sewing! This is on top of being Chamberlin’s music teacher! Lisa keeps everyone organized and on task with meeting agendas and presents to staff on a regular basis.
Recently, Lisa led "Trunk Tuesday" with support staff, Integrated Arts teachers and all new staff to make sure they know how to get support for students, how to make referrals, create customized Bee Bucks and the many other resources she has created and organized in our PBiS staff drive. Chamberlin is an exemplar school because of Lisa's dedication and commitment to PBiS.

School Safety
As we opened RMCS ZEMs today many parents expressed concerns about the development surrounding the school. My concerns are not with the development itself, but how city infrastructure can be developed in kind to ensure schools are kept safe. With the uptick in traffic, we need school zones at school and traffic monitors to assist students and the community alike in safe passage. This model, which the City of Burlington has implemented has provided great benefits to the community. I am hopeful that the City Council will take up this discussion and reconsider the decision not to move forward with five school zones with traffic monitors.
A school zone at Chamberlin had been previously approved. On October 2nd, the council approved a temporary traffic monitor at Rick Marcotte Central School for only the duration of construction at Catamount Run.
Linked here is the City Council schedule. Meetings are in person and virtual. You can also email the City Council at any time to share feedback regarding safety around our schools.
The School District has also sent City Council requests for more detailed inclusion in the City Plan. There will be a Public Hearing to discuss the City plan on November 16th.
As a reminder, here is the link to School Safety that outlines the district’s emergency plans.

ZEMs
Now that the Rick Marcotte ZEMs are open and students are in those classrooms, all efforts are focused on Orchard.
The siding is complete and the countertops will be installed this week. Painting is starting and DEW will begin flooring in the mechanical room. They are doing the final work on the connector and will be getting started soon on the last edges of the roof and gutters.
The projected opening date for Orchard is later in November. I will keep you posted on that schedule and when we will hold the Grand Opening there.
