Principal Corner
Greetings AES families,
Our annual Halloween Parade was full of ghosts and goblins, treats and even a few tricks. Students from Great Brook Middle School lined Shea Field to high five AES students and staff as they marched in costume down Main Street, then greeted by the community, who took pictures and waved. We returned to the school for an afternoon of Halloween filled activities, crafts, and parties. I have included some pictures from Halloween in the newsletter below.
Field Trip
We took our first field trip to CVHS to see the theater production of Finding Nemo JR. The students loved the bus ride and were so delighted by the performance. We look forward to more field trips throughout the school year.
Emergency Management Training
This month, members of the Antrim police, fire and rescue departments came to a staff meeting to review emergency procedures to ensure all members of the school community know how to respond to emergency situations and know what to expect from emergency responders so all staff and students remain safe in all situations. We are very fortunate to have emergency responders who are so invested in our school.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Thank you to so many families who came to the school for conferences. The conferences give us the unique opportunity to sit one to one with you to share the hard work your child is doing each day while at school. If you could not speak with your child's teacher, please reach out to them or to me and we can set up an appointment.
Wishing you the very best weekend.
Warmest regards,
Beth Gibney
Veteran's Day
To all Veterans, On behalf of the AES staff thank you to all the men and women who have served our country. Happy Veterans Day and thank you for your dedication and sacrifice.

What's Happening in Our Area
Kindergarten
Ms. Dibble’s class has been working hard! We have started a new unit on shapes. Thursday we looked at how 3D shapes look different from different perspectives.
Kindergarteners are hard at work blending sounds together to make words! In one WIN group we have been reading words with short vowels and matching pictures to show our understanding of the word.
Grade 1
This week in Mrs. DiFolco’s class, students explored with pattern blocks, shape blocks, magnetic blocks and Unifix Cubes. The goal was to design something of their choice while using the skills of geometry, symmetry, and imagination! Creativity galore!
Mrs. Sullivan’s class studied Veteran’s Day and its meaning. We wrote letters to veterans and decorated them. We also tried to see how many words we could create out of the letters in the word Veteran. Many students shared their personal connection with Veterans, how they served our country or in what branch of the military they were members.
Grade 2
In second grade, we have continued adding and subtracting within 100 using multiple different methods, including tape diagram, the arrow way, and the vertical method. We have also learned new concepts in literacy that have been further applied in their small group readings! Great job, second grade!
Grade 4
In math, we have worked with the powers of ten and finding patterns with our solutions. We are brushing up on fact fluency.
In literacy, we have been meeting in small groups to work on our foundational skills and we are diving into opinion writing!
In science, we have been learning about sound waves. Ask us about our cup telephones and how we made our voices travel.
Wellness
This past week in Wellness, we embraced the Halloween spirit and played fitness games like Zombie Tag, Raid the Pumpkin Patch, and Graveyard scramble. Our focus has continued to be on heart health or Cardiovascular Endurance, as well as Muscular Endurance.
At the end of the week, Miss Page introduced 2nd and 4th grade to GaGa Ball. A fun, fast-paced game played in an octagonal pit, where students strike the ball to hit another student on or below the knee to get them out. There is a GaGa Ball pit at the Antrim Memorial Park and our hope is students will get together and play there!
Halloween
Classroom counseling lessons this week focused on how mistakes help us learn. In kindergarten we focused on practicing, making small changes, and asking for help when learning new things. In first, second, third and fourth grades we build on to those skills be practicing setting and reaching goals.
Most students in first, second, third and fourth grade have had an individual “minute meeting” with me, and I am now meeting with the Kindergarten students. I also meet with students during snack time and lunch for informal conversations and sharing with peers.
Please reach out if you have questions of any kind about your child.
