Principal's Update
Dear Kenwood Families,
The 4th and 5th graders performed beautifully yesterday afternoon and evening. Thank you, Ms. Sue and Ms. Hunt, for helping our students prepare for their fantastic music concert. The songs were inspiring, the instrumental pieces were complex and artfully executed, and we all loved cheering, “Let’s Go Band!”
As we enter the last few weeks of school, let’s work together to help our students finish the year in ways that make us proud. Good attendance, safe behavior, attentive listening, and PRIDE (peace, respect, integrity, dependability, and engagement) allow everyone to have great days of learning.
Over the long weekend, please check for missing library books, school-issued chromebooks, iPads, and hotspots, and ask your children to return them to school promptly. Kenwood will store all devices this summer, and your cooperation in getting everything back to school is greatly appreciated!
Mark your calendars for Field Day (June 3), the Kindergarten End of Year Celebration (June 8 at 3:00 in the Outdoor Classroom), and the 5th Grade Completion Ceremony (June 9 at 10:00 in the gym). There are several field trips and walking trips to the School Forest as well. Our students and staff have worked so hard this year; taking time to reflect and celebrate is important as we prepare to say goodbye for the summer.
We’ll also distribute yearbooks in the last week of school. I can’t wait for you to see them! Ms. Sklar, the Yearbook Club, and parent volunteers put together a wonderful memory book for our school community. Don’t forget to order yours!
The last Kenwood Courier will be shared with you on Friday, June 5. I’ll provide some staffing updates for the 2026-27 academic year with you then.
I wish you a wonderful holiday weekend. See you on Thursday, May 28!
Warmly,
Principal Johnson
Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Field Day: June 3
Kenwood's Bus Bike
We had a successful test ride last weekend for the bike bus! We have decided to continue the pilot on Fridays for the rest of the school year. Several families who live outside of the South Uptown neighborhood have expressed interest in joining the bike bus for part of the route. See the map below to check out our route (the “best route” on Google maps) and we can make a plan to meet up along the route.

May and June Lunch Room Volunteer Sign Up
Recently overheard in the lunchroom among parent/caregiver volunteers:
"It's so fun to volunteer in the lunchroom!"
"Friday is Pizza Day -- what could be better?"
"There's something so peaceful about wiping down tables. I could do it all day!"
"Look at all those blueberries!"
We love seeing you in the lunchroom. Please come visit us, pass out a few napkins, help open some milk cartons, admire the student helpers, check in with your child and their friends, and feel connected to this wonderful school community! THANK YOU.
Kenwood Library
Your Kenwood library books are not 10 years overdue as suggested in last week's announcement.
Kenwood library books are due this week, May 21, 2026. Please support your child(ren) in returning the borrowed books. Thank you.
Early Childhood Screening for Every Incoming Kindergartener
Minnesota state law requires all incoming kindergarteners to be screened. The program helps find possible health and developmental concerns that may impact a child’s learning.
If you have completed screening either with MPS or another school district, no action is required at this time. If your child has not yet been screened, please make an appointment to complete this process before the start of the school year. For more information or to book an appointment, call 612-668-3715 or visit https://qrco.de/MPS-Screening.

Know Your Rights – Immigration Status
The Department of Human Rights recently created a landing page that details what is (and is not)
covered under the Minnesota Human Rights Act, when it comes to discrimination against
immigrants. State law clearly prohibits discrimination based on national origin, race, color, and
religion in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, public services, education,
credit, and business. While the Minnesota Human Rights Act does not explicitly prohibit
discrimination based on “immigration status” or “citizenship status,” discrimination that targets people
because they were born outside of the United States, speak a different language, appear to be
immigrants, or are perceived as undocumented may be covered under the Minnesota Human
Rights Act’s national-origin and race protections. Anyone who believes they may have been
discriminated against should contact us by completing this online form. Learn more on our
webpage here: Discrimination Related to Immigration Status.
Food Resources for Families
We want to ensure Kenwood families are aware of the following food and nutrition resources. Every Meal works to fight hunger in our community by filling the food gaps children face during weekends, summers, and extended breaks. The program provides students with 4-5 pounds of food to take home in their backpacks every Friday. We have five different food bag options available to accommodate various cultural, dietary, and situational needs. If you are interested in receiving an Every Meal bag, please contact the Kenwood Family Liaison, Victoria Johnson [Victoria.Johnson@mpls.k12.mn.us or (612) 668-2760] to enroll or to ask questions.
Additionally, the Second Harvest Heartland Care Center helps people find free food through a network of food shelves and community resources. Find the best resource for you here You can also talk to a Care Center an advisor 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. The Care Center is free, friendly, and confidential. Help is available in English, Spanish, Hmong and Somali with interpreters available for other languages. Call or text 866-844-3663, or visit 2harvest.org/carecenter for more information.
If you are in need of immediate assistance reach out to our school Social Worker, Alex Holzchuh [Alexandra.Holzschuh@mpls.k12.mn.us or (612) 668-2760]
Finally, if you are in the position to help, the Kenwood PTA is collecting monetary donations to purchase gift cards for our school Social Worker, Alex Holzchuh to distribute to families. If you can contribute, please venmo the Kenwood PTA at @KenwoodPTAMpls
