Students Earn Best Transportation Award at Future City Competition Students Earn Best Transportation Award at Future City Competition

On Saturday, January 18th, 12 seventh-grade students from the Middle School competed in the regional Future City Competition at Steelton-Highspire High School. These students worked for months to create their floating turtle-shaped city, Lemuria. They studied engineering, city planning, zoning, and resident services to create a fully functioning city that meets the health and safety needs of its residents. The students created a new city island that can navigate around storms, and fully submerge for safety. The students wrote an essay and created a scale model from recycled materials.

Lemuria won the award for best transportation in the city. April Blain, Mason Mansfield, and Aiden Rubio formally presented the city for judging. The other students included: Charlotte Blain, Mary Blain, Trevor Bowman, Ian Grigas, Paul Hipkiss, Waylon Kearney, Tristan St. Jacques, John Watson, and Mason Zinn. Congratulations Bulldogs!

On Tuesday, January 21, junior Aliyah Leonard at the High School attended a meeting and luncheon of the Optimist Club of York at Hoss's in East York. Aliyah placed third in the local club's essay contest on the prompt, "How Optimism has Paved my Road to Success." Aliyah read her essay to the group and accepted a monetary prize award for third place. West York was one of 5 schools to participate in the contest. She was joined by her mother, Teresa Smith, and her English and Creative Writing Teacher, Ms. Nicki Stiger.

Chairperson of the contest, Ms. Connie Sohnleitner, was complimentary of Aliyah and her hard work on an essay about how a positive attitude has shaped her into a mature young lady.

"Having taught Aliyah in 10th grade English as well as Creative Writing and English 11, I have loved watching her hard work pay off," shared Ms. Stiger. "She is a student dedicated to success and growth."

Kindergarteners Create 'Everlasting Snow' in STEM Activity Kindergarteners Create 'Everlasting Snow' in STEM Activity

Ms. Lorrie Rodriguez's kindergarten class at Wallace Elementary welcomed a special guest, Mr. Stover, a parent volunteer, who led an exciting STEM lesson on making snow! The students had a fantastic time mixing the materials and then creating and decorating their own snowmen. Best of all, this snow never melts!

Wallace Elementary Readers Earn a Special Visit from Therapy Dogs Wallace Elementary Readers Earn a Special Visit from Therapy Dogs

Students at Wallace Elementary who read at least 250 minutes and completed their calendars in December participated in a reading reward on January 16th and 17th. With the reading specialists, Ms. Melissa Lamparter and Ms. Jacquelyn Niemiec, these students read a book and discussed the importance of reading. They also enjoyed the company of therapy dogs and their owners, the K-PETS volunteers. The therapy dogs brought a smile to all of the Wallace readers and many adults in the building! Thank you to the Keystone Pet Therapy Services, as the therapy dogs certainly touched lives and warmed hearts through their interactions at Wallace. Keep reading, Wallace!

Six Volunteers Still Needed! Six Volunteers Still Needed!

zoom_out_map

We need your help! On Thursday, March 13th, Junior Achievement of South Central PA will be at the High School with their STEM Summit Program. Students will be participating in the day-long event designed to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

The goal of the STEM Summit is to inspire students to pursue an academic STEM focus in the remainder of their high school courses. After the completion of the STEM Summit, guidance counselors have a foundation to work with students on appropriate course work.

For this day to be a success, we will need volunteers to facilitate ONE of the STEM activities for the day as students rotate through your station. You do not need to have a STEM background to be a great volunteer!

You do not have to be an approved school volunteer to help with this day. Junior Achievement will provide online training as well as on-site support to all volunteers. A light breakfast and lunch will also be available for volunteers.

Please consider volunteering and join us as we spend the day empowering and inspiring our students. Check out the following information:

Does your child have signs or symptoms of the flu, Covid or RSV? Did they test positive?

The recommendations are that your child stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication and that they feel good enough to return to school. The CDC also recommends (it is optional) that a mask be worn for 5 days after their return if they tested positive for Covid.

Students who have been exposed to someone who tested positive for Covid do not need to stay home from school unless they come down with symptoms or test positive.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your school nurse.
