Our Learning Community...
This week, the State of California and San Diego Unified will participate in the Great Shake Out, an Earthquake Drill, making it the perfect time to review our school’s emergency procedures. Our top priority is keeping students and staff safe. In any emergency, our staff work together following established procedures until San Diego Unified School Police, San Diego Police Department, and/or the San Diego Fire Department arrive to support and assume control over operations. Here are the emergency scenarios our site is prepared for...
Shelter-In-Place
-
Used when it’s safer to stay inside (e.g., severe weather, environmental hazards, animal on campus).
-
Students and staff quickly move indoors, doors and windows are closed. All classrooms are equipped with emergency kits containing basic supplies that are designed to support students and staff if there is a need to remain in a shelter-in-place situation for an extended period of time.
Everyone remains inside until an official “All Clear” is given.
Lockdown
-
Used when there is a dangerous person or situation on or near campus.
-
Students and staff quickly gather inside, doors are locked, blinds closed, and everyone stays quiet away from windows and doors. All classrooms are equipped with emergency kits containing basic supplies that are designed to support students and staff if there is a need to remain in a lockdown situation for an extended period of time.
No one leaves the space until an official “All Clear” is given.
Earthquake
-
Everyone “Drops, Covers, and Holds On” under desks or tables to protect their heads.
-
Wait for the “All Clear” or a signal to evacuate to a designated safe area.
Fire
-
A fire alarm signals evacuation.
-
Students and staff calmly exit the building, moving to the designated evacuation area.
-
Remain outside until the “All Clear” is given.
You play an important role in school safety too! Here is how families can help...
-
Keep your contact information up to date in the school office (see link below for directions).
-
Add any trusted friends or family members to your child’s emergency contact list, so they are authorized to pick up your child if needed.
-
Practice your own safety drills at home to prepare your family for emergencies.
Remember: In the event of an emergency, regular operations at the school site pause until the "All Clear" is given. All staff are following emergency response protocols which means our office will not be answering phones or opening the office space to visitors. During this time we will work to communicate updates as soon as possible and as often as needed, which is why updated contact information is so important. Once the “All Clear” is given, staff will then support any necessary reunification, student check-outs, or follow-up phone calls to ensure all students are safely connected with their families.
Save the Date...

LGBTQIA+ History Month
Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!
Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.
Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.
Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:
-
Choose a cozy time and space to read together
-
Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)
-
Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension
-
Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby
The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
