Principal's Corner
Thank you to all of the students and families who attended the open house last week! We were so excited to welcome everyone back into the building for the first time in over two years. For those who were able to attend, we hope you enjoyed seeing the school and participating in the different activities. If you were not able to attend, we will have more in-school activities in the future.
As we begin the last month of the school year, students will be participating in some end of the year testing. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will take the Oregon state assessments. All students will be taking the STAR to see their growth in math and literacy. Please support your student being able to show how much they know and have learned by manitaing a bedtime routine. We also welcome you to speak to your student about giving their best effort.
With gratitude,
Principal Walker
5th Grade Promotion
We will share more information in the next few weeks. For now, if you have a 5th grade student please reserve Tuesday, June 14, for the 5th grade promotion.
Lexia Celebrations
Every Monday, the "Lexia Fairies" will visit classrooms to celebrate the students who met their minutes/usage goal in Lexia. Students who met their goal will receive a certificate and will choose a water bottle sticker. They will also be showered with bubbles and applauded for. You can encourage students by asking them how they are doing to meet their weekly goal. You can also ask them on Mondays if they received a certificate.
May's Themes
Justice means that you give everyone the same chance to success. A big part of this is the goal of ensuring that people are treated fairly.
We will also discuss the feeling of being brave. The phrase that we use with disappointed is "put your brave in front." We will have conversations with students about what it might look like to put your brave in front and work through challenges.
Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritgage Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
This encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. This month is intended to celebrate these individual cultures and their histories. Taking the time to learn about other cultures can help us all understand and respect each other. In the face of violence and discrimination against Asians, we need to shine a greater light on Asian and Pacific Islander voices, history, and joy.
Additional Activities:
Jewish American Heritage Month
May is also Jewish American Heritage Month.
May is a perfect time to celebrate the significant contributions Jewish people have made to American culture, arts, science, government, civil rights and beyond. For Jewish Americans, it can be a time to celebrate their roots and learn more about who they are and their rich history.
Another very important reason to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month is to stop hate. There has been a big increase in the number of hate crimes targeted against Jewish Americans. Learning about others with different backgrounds and perspectives can help us to better understand one another.
Additional Activities:
- "The Passover Guest" Read Aloud
Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and May 5 is Children's Mental Health Awareness Day. According to SAMHSA, National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day was created "to shine a national spotlight on the importance of caring for every child’s mental health and to reinforce the message that positive mental health is essential to a child’s healthy development."
This day serves to:
- Raise awareness of the efficacy of community-based mental health and substance use services for children, youth, young adults, and their families;
- Demonstrate how children’s mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, recovery, and resilience; and
- Show how children, youth, and young adults with mental and/or substance use disorders can flourish in their communities
Family Survey
A family survey was sent home with students. The survey is optional. The results from the survey will help the school have a better idea of the needs that exist in our school community, which will allow the school to collaborate with community partners to better provide supports.
You can complete the survey online by clicking on the survey link:

Communications Survey

We're reaching out to the RSD community to gather input and hear your thoughts on how effective current communications tools are. The survey will close on May 15, 2022. Please click the link below to take our survey.
