Hilltopper Community,

It was great to have the hallways and classrooms full of parents last Thursday for our annual Back-to-School Open House. I hope that those who were able to attend enjoyed a taste of the student experience. I’d like to reiterate a few things from my welcome remarks:

  • Thank you to those who volunteered last Tuesday for our Young Hearts for Life event. With your help, we were able to provide free ECG screenings to over 1,000 students. As I mentioned at Open House, it really took the whole Glenbard West community to make this happen, and I was in awe of the support we received from over two hundred volunteers.

  • Glenbard West is very lucky to have several parent groups whose mission is to support our students and help us run programs throughout the school: Boosters, West Nation, Association of Music Parents, Friends for Forensics, West Theatre Parent Guild. I highly encourage you to get involved with one or more of these groups to whatever extent you are able.

  • We are excited to expand our career exploration opportunities for students this year. As part of this effort we are creating a network of Hilltopper families and alumni who would be willing to share their career experiences and expertise with our students. There are a number of ways to get involved. If you are able and interested, please complete this brief form.

This year our district has transitioned from Remind to ParentSquare. Many of our teachers, coaches, and club sponsors use ParentSquare to communicate with students and families. If you are experiencing difficulty registering for ParentSquare, please see the troubleshooting guide below.

And finally, Homecoming is Saturday, October 3rd, and the theme is Hollywood on the Hill. There are so many fun ways for West families to get involved in our Homecoming traditions—including joining us for the pep rally and bonfire on Friday night, the pancake breakfast and parade on Saturday morning, and the athletic competitions and performances throughout the day.

As always, thank you for reading. Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or concerns.

Go West!

SCHOOL COUNSELING SCHOOL COUNSELING

Kicking Off College Application Season

The School Counseling Department is excited to officially kick off college application season with several upcoming events for our upperclassmen!

College Representative Visits As of this week, we already have around 100 college representatives scheduled to visit Glenbard West (we hosted over 200 last year!). These visits are an excellent opportunity for students to gather information and get face-to-face time with admissions representatives.

  • Action Item: Encourage your student to monitor the list and sign up for visits under Events in SchooLinks.

Financial Aid & FAFSA

  • FAFSA Availability: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application is anticipated to open in October.

  • Important Note: Completing the FAFSA (or submitting a Non-Participation Form) is an Illinois graduation requirement. Financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so early submission is strongly recommended.

  • Support Workshops: FAFSA workshops for seniors will take place during Glenbard Hour support periods. Additional district-wide Financial Aid Application Workshops will run throughout the fall, winter, and spring. Watch for upcoming dates!

Senior Class Updates

On August 21, counselors presented a college application overview video to all seniors during Glenbard Hour Advisory. It covered application checklists, transcript requests, letter of recommendation procedures in SchooLinks, standardized testing, essay writing, and scholarships.

Counselors have already begun meeting with seniors individually and in small groups to navigate SchooLinks and the Common App.

  • How Parents Can Help: Ask your senior about their counselor meeting and log into SchooLinks together to complete the Parent Input Form. This information helps counselors enrich their letters of recommendation. We also offer a student "brag sheet" to help teachers write strong recommendations.

  • Access all of our guides on our College Application Resources Page.

Junior Class Updates

Juniors are continuing their college preparation journey! On August 21, counselors shared this instructional video during Glenbard Hour Advisory on researching college fit and building activity resumes in SchooLinks.

  • Counselors will visit English classes this spring for detailed follow-up on college searches.

  • Juniors will be meeting with counselors in the Spring to review postsecondary plans.

    • College bound juniors will receive this checklist.

  • Stay tuned for more tools and events on researching colleges in the coming months!

Welcome Back!

The 2026-2027 school year is well underway! The Dean’s Office is thrilled to welcome all the new students and families, and welcome back all those returning for another year on the hill.

Attendance

Glenbard West is great because of the people who make it great. Our school is simply not the same place when your student is not here. Not only is your student missing critical instructional time, but we are also missing the opportunity to learn and grow from them.

As in the past, our office is dedicated to improving student attendance because we know it is the single most important factor to not only a student’s academic success, but also their social-emotional well-being. We will continue to share our school-specific attendance data with you this year, while offering tips and tricks we’ve learned to help you get your student to school on time every single day. Building positive attendance habits in our students is all of our jobs.

If your student is struggling with regular attendance, reach out to your student’s counselor, social worker, or dean with any questions or concerns. We’re here to help!

Understanding PowerSchool Codes

Below are some of the common PowerSchool codes you may see on your student's attendance that the Dean’s Office uses.

A = a teacher has marked your student absent

TRU = your student was truant from class

TU = your student was late to class for an unexcused reason

TC = your student received a consequence for their tardies to class

Remember to call in!

All absences must be communicated with our Attendance Office before 10:30. Call (630) 858-5060 anytime, day or night to speak with one of our Attendance Office Assistants or leave a voicemail.

Need Help?

Sometimes, speaking up is not the easiest thing to do. If you know your student is struggling to confide or communicate with their Dean or another school official regarding something serious, harmful, or dangerous, Glenbard West provides the Hilltopper Help Form.

West has had a great start to the school year with so many student athletes involved. Once again this fall, we have over 750 student athletes involved in fall sports who are constantly striving for success in the classroom and on the playing fields. We are very appreciative of the entire West community that supports all of our programs.

Please note the following important reminder regarding parent pick up and drop offs for student athletes: Pickups and drop offs should not happen in front of Biester Gym on Ellyn Road facing either direction. This is reserved for our practice and game buses. Student athlete pick up and drop off should take place on Crescent Blvd. near the turf field or down by the staff parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation.

We have a constant schedule of home events throughout the fall, so please notice the most current schedules at https://schools.snap.app/glenbardwest.

Thank you once again to the West Boosters who support all of our students at West in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities. Please look to sign up and participate in some way on one or more of their committees. More information can be found at https://gwboosters.ejoinme.org/west

Please note the weekend of October 3rd on your calendars. This is Homecoming at West and we look forward to showcasing our teams and school that represent pride, tradition, and excellence.

9:00am Varsity Field Hockey vs. Naperville North at Memorial Field

LATEX ALLERGIES

Schools across the nation are experiencing more and more students who have latex allergies. Often, students with this allergy can have severe and even life-threatening reactions if exposed to latex resins and powders. For their safety, there are certain latex products we no longer allow on campus. Latex balloons and “Silly String” pose a significant health threat to students with a latex allergy. These products are not allowed on campus at any time, including after school, evening, and weekend events. With this in mind, we request your help: Please talk with your children about this health and safety issue. Some students might not understand the reason for a “balloon ban.” At West, we want all parents to know that their children are safe on campus.
