Principal's Corner: A Message from Principal Thomas
Good Equity Troublemaker Award
The late Congressman John Lewis is known for his famous instructions to all humans fighting for social justice. “Speak up, speak out, get in the way... get in good trouble, necessary trouble." We are proud to say that 4th-grade teacher, Mrs. Vanessa Williams, was nominated by F.Ave to receive this honor for equity, speaking out for justice, and causing good trouble through transformative work that provides equitable access, opportunities, and outcomes for all students. Congratulations, Mrs. Williams!!!
G.E.N.T.S. Honor Their Moms for Women's History Month
The F.Ave chapter of the G.E.N.T.S. organization recently completed an etiquette unit, where students learned essential skills such as proper dining etiquette, seating arrangements, and place settings. On Friday, they proudly demonstrated their knowledge during a culminating Mother/Son dinner at Wahoo! Grill. It was a memorable evening for both moms and sons, and they are already looking forward to making it an annual tradition.
S.T.E.A.M. Night Was A Huge Success
A huge thank you to all the F.Ave families who joined us for S.T.E.A.M. Night! It was a fantastic evening filled with science, technology, art, and so much student excitement. We also want to give a special shout-out to our S.T.E.A.M. teacher, Mrs. Carty, for her incredible work in bringing this event to life.
Spring Progress Report
We are pleased to share that your child's Spring progress report is now available in the Parent Portal. Please note that this report card represents a midsemester snapshot of your child's academic progress and does not reflect final grades. Teachers will continue to update grades and provide feedback throughout the remainder of the year as learning continues.
We encourage you to review the report card with your child, celebrate their accomplishments, and discuss any areas where additional support may be helpful. Ongoing communication among families, students, and teachers is an important part of supporting student success.
If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress, please don't hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or school administration. We are committed to partnering with you to support your child's growth and learning.
Directions for accessing grades in the Parent Portal are on page 24 of the Grading and Reporting Handbook.
Principal’s Coffee Chat - Your Voice, Your Meeting
Your voice, your meeting! Our next Principal’s Coffee Chat will be shaped entirely by parent input. Have a specific topic in mind? Email Mrs. Malik Morrow at mmorrow@csdecatur.net to add it to the agenda.
We want to hear from you! Georgia Climate Survey
A big thank you to the parents who have already shared their feedback through the Georgia Climate Survey. If you haven't had a chance yet, please complete the survey by March 31, 2026. Your input is invaluable to our school community!
Best regards,
Derrick L. Thomas

Women in HerStory Bowl
On Friday, March 20th, FAVE had its first-ever Women in HerStory Bowl. Each fifth-grade class was represented by four risk-takers who studied a packet of facts on the contributions of women in sports, science, politics, etc. In the first round, the two classes that advanced were DiGiacomo and Miller/O'Keefe. In the second round, Vickery/Johnson and Stewart/Sanchez advanced to the championship round. The winning class, with a score of 2200 points, was Mr. DiGiacomo's. The four team members representing his class were Gianna Cummo, Luna Ambabo, Everly Ann Poynter and Hayden Mann. We are so proud of all of the students who participated and hope everyone learned more about the valuable contributions of women in HerStory!
