January Newsletter for S-RC Elementary Families
Welcome to Second Semester!!
It's cold outside, so please make sure students are coming to school dressed appropriately each day. Winter coats are a MUST have on these cold Nebraska days - as well as gloves and hats. When snow starts falling, you may want to send snow boots, scarves and any other cold weather gear as well! If there is snow on the ground, students will not be able to play in the snow without actual snow boots. They will be able to play on a shoveled area of the playground (but will still be outside, so winter coats are still required). Please refer to the image below for cold weather gear recommendations.

Powerful Parents using PBiS
The biggest issue that we have been facing in the elementary building has been "disruption." When we look up minor disruption in our PBiS handbook, it is defined as "Students engaging in low-intensity, but inappropriate disruptions such as noises, rocking chair, tapping pencil, etc." Examples: When the teacher is attempting to teach, the student is continuously blurting.
Here are some intervention ideas for defiance that you can try at home:
- Acknowledging positive behavior
- Avoid power struggles
- Redirection
- Take a break
- Praise when cooperative and well behaved
- Use calm neutral tone
Attendance Matters!!
Chronically absent means that the student misses over 18 days of school (for any reason) in one school year. Over two-thirds of our fourth grade students in the United States are not reading at grade level. Researchers believe this can be directly related back to chronic absenteeism! Here at Shelby-Rising City, we have our absenteeism policy outlined in Board Policy 503.03. It states that families will receive a letter from the school when they reach FOUR and SIX non-excused absences in a semester. When a student reaches EIGHT non-excused days in a semester, a barriers meeting is required to discuss attendance. Any student who is absent more than 10 unexcused per semester may be in violation of state compulsory attendance laws, and could be reported to the county attorney.
Honor Roll Students!

Mat Man: Who is he and why do we draw him?
Every year the preschoolers work on learning to draw "Mat Man". Through a multi-sensory experience, Mat Man helps them develop their fine motor and cognitive skills. While listening to the Mat Man song, they learn to draw a person using the same shapes and lines used to make capital and lowercase letters. For example, if we are drawing a capital A, we know we need the two slants from Mat Man's arms and the short stick from his foot. This process also helps them learn skills like size recognition, placement, and sequence.
Second Grade Superstars
The second graders have been busy learning about animals in the current science unit. In the beginning lessons, students learned how scientists group animals and what characteristics they look at when categorizing them. Students also learned how to listen to frog calls to identify the species of frog and are currently constructing prototypes of bird feeders in the final lesson of our unit. In social studies, we are learning about maps and how to tell coordinates on a grid.
We are wrapping up our measurement unit in math and have shown what weβve learned on our winter MAP testing. We will continue with money and word problems as we head back from Winter Break!
This month's music spotlight is with Kindergarten. They made a guitar craft from household items such as tissue boxes, paper towel tubes, rubber bands etc. The guitars were so colorful and the students were extremely happy with the outcome. Thank you Mr. Evans for joining us and assisting!
