Waters Fine Arts 2023 Legacy Grant Award!

We are so happy to share with Everyone! Waters Fine Arts has received a $20,000 Legacy Award from CPS Arts, our FPAMC Leadership Team! Our grant proposal was rooted in design thinking and my professional development experience at https://dschool.stanford.edu/. Thank you CPSArts!

We are creating a NEW 4D Storytelling Flexible Classroom in the current 2nd floor Literary Salon location. We are adding multi-media digital screens, standing sound recording stations and stage performance space to enhance visual art, literacy arts and Makerspace additions (flexible studio and safe space for K-8 grade artists). We will have a digital calendar of important arts events that will also function as a multimodal documentation panel to share fine arts learning.

Waters is honored and truly grateful to be selected as an exemplary veteran fine and performing arts school by Chicago Public Schools Arts Leadership. We look forward to sharing how our flexible classroom has enhanced student learning when we host CPSArts and FPAMC workshops at Waters this spring!

(Thanks to our Mr. Riley, our building engineer, for putting together all of the furniture! We appreciate!)

This month in the art lab...

December is upon us...Where did all the time go...

We are wrapping up first semester with the study of snow. Mother Nature's most amazing sculpture material...We are extending November's study of radial symmetry (mandalas and rangolis) to the OOAK snowflake! What fun!

We are practicing repeating patterns, creating our own art materials and advocating for ourselves as artists (see Popsicle below:)). As artists K-8, we are exploring texture and form while making a bit of magic with mirrors and glitter. Our project is the same at age 5 or 14: Demonstrate radial symmetry by using multiples in a 3D form.

Each one is as fragile-yet-strong, breathtakingly beautiful and as unique as a snowflake. All in all, a lovely way to end our time together in the 1st Semester. I hope we all have a chance to build a snow unicorn or sled down a snowy hill this Winter Break...

Thank you for all of your support throughout the 1st Semester, and always.

With Kindness,

Mrs. Vecchioni

THE ART LAB LIVING HABITAT WALL FULLY FUNDED (~$4,000!)

BRAVO Critter Club, community supporters and good friends...

We will have a living wall habitat for students to study, steward and sculpt for years to come...We will be designing living habitats for salt, brackish and freshwater fish, amphibians, insects and invertebrates. We are planning tree frog observation, guppy breeding, an ant/axolotl vivarium and a Ryukyu Islands coral reef reconstruction.

These aquatic ecosystems will be great observation and study centers for all Waters' students. We will be using these real-world microcosms in unending ways----from simple living observational models to constructs in order to learn simple electrical circuitry in a fun and new way!

Thank you for your support of this one-of-a-kind opportunity for student choice, voice and identity!

GRRL Scouts & WAVEMAKERS Joined Forces in November!

At our only meeting in November, both clubs created Inuit folkways cards and songs of gratitude to share with our Elder Buddies at a local elderly facility in our neighborhood. All Changemaker Clubs enjoyed this arts-in-action activity with our good friend, Ms. Zelle.

We learned songs (and earned a badge:)), made art, created connections and had fun in this rewarding experience for all. Thanks to ALL!
