A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:
Today, May 1st, is National Principal Appreciation Day and an opportunity to recognize the hard work, day in and day out, of our amazing principals – Principal Traci Westman at Pell, Principal Dr. Michael Browner, Jr. at Thompson, and Principal Jared Vance at Rogers. From leading our teachers, to motivating our students, to working with parents and community groups, to making sure our school buildings are ready every day, principals are the quarterbacks who coordinate all of the elements that make for a great education in our schools. Thank you for everything you do!
One of the best ways to help celebrate National Principal Appreciation Day, and every day of the school year, is to attend school! Attendance Matters, Every Day is a theme that I and all of our school principals have been highlighting throughout the 2023-2024 school year. The reasons are very simple. Research shows that chronically absent students who miss 10% or more school days during the year (or just 2 days per month) are less likely to graduate from high school and to succeed in college and career. So for these last 7-weeks of the school year, let’s continue to focus on attendance as our students complete their classes, final exams, and gain the skills they need to move on to the next grade level and to graduate.
A reminder to our parents that tomorrow, May 2nd at 5:30 PM at Innovate Newport, I will be hosting a meeting of our Parent / Family Advisory Council. The Council is designed to be a voice for our parents and families and an opportunity to share the work we’re doing in all of our schools to improve student achievement. Hoy, 1 de mayo, es el Día Nacional de Agradecimiento a los Directores y una oportunidad para reconocer el arduo trabajo, día tras día, de nuestros increíbles directores: la directora Traci Westman de Pell, el director Dr. Michael Browner, Jr. de Thompson y el director Jared Vance en Rogers. ¡Una de las mejores maneras de ayudar a celebrar el Día Nacional de Agradecimiento a los Directores, y todos los días del año escolar, es asistir a la escuela! La asistencia importa, todos los días es un tema que yo y todos los directores de nuestras escuelas hemos estado destacando durante el año escolar 2023-2024. Las razones son muy simples. Las investigaciones muestran que los estudiantes crónicamente ausentes que faltan el 10% o más de los días escolares durante el año (o solo 2 días por mes) tienen menos probabilidades de graduarse de la escuela secundaria y de tener éxito en la universidad y en su carrera. May Student Testing At Pell, Thompson, and Rogers
Please be aware that important state required assessments are scheduled for this month at Pell, Thompson, and Rogers. Please help support your student by providing a solid schedule that includes a regular time to bed, a good night’s sleep, and a regular time to get to school in the morning. And be sure to talk with your child about how their day and exams went. These simple steps can make a big difference in giving students the confidence they need to do their best on these assessments.

Budget Hearing Tonight At 5:30 PM In City Hall
Tonight at 5:30 PM in City Hall the Newport School Committee and the Newport City Council will hold a joint workshop to learn more about Newport Public Schools budget process and priorities. It is our hope to work collaboratively with the City Council for positive outcomes for everyone.

Last Friday, our sophomores and juniors had the opportunity to explore a wide range of colleges and universities at the annual Rogers High School College Fair. With over 70 colleges from across the country in attendance, the fair was a big success. A big thank you to our amazing guidance staff and college advisors for putting together a great College Fair!

Food, Fun & Culture at TMS Culture Fest
Last Friday evening, Thompson Middle School held their Culture Fest to celebrate the incredible diversity of students and families that make up our TMS community. Delicious food and cultural items were shared from countries as diverse as Portugal, Mexico, Ukraine, Nigeria, Guatemala, Brasil, Morocco, and South Korea. Culture Fest was a great evening of food, fun, and learning about each other’s cultures!

Penny Carnival Fun For A Cause At Pell Elementary
Last Thursday evening, Pell students and families had a blast participating in the annual Penny Carnival with fun games and "spare pennies" collected to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help children with blood cancers and their families. Thank you to everyone who came out and donated!

This heartfelt Tony-Award winning musical follows a group of wonderfully unique and impassioned adolescents as they compete for the bee championship. Featuring a thrilling score by William Finn, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a joyful night of comedy and quirk that celebrates the pursuit of victory and the gift of being true to oneself. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students.

The Rhode Island Pre-K lottery is open and accepting applications from Newport families with children who turn 4 on or before September 1, 2024, and are not eligible for kindergarten. Learn more and apply here.

Hidden In Plain Sight presented at May 21 Wellness Meeting
The Wellness Subcommittee has invited the Newport Prevention Coalition to present “Hidden In Plain Sight” at their next meeting on May 21 at Pell Elementary School Cafeteria. The presentation is a parent awareness exhibit of clues to help raise awareness of possible student use of drugs or alcohol. Parents, guardians, and teachers are all invited to attend.
