Panther Pride News is published weekly to keep all members of the school community informed and involved.

Rayna Smartwood is a National Junior Honor Society student with a 4.0 GPA. She he is kind and cares for her classmates. She has the plan to become a lawyer and is honing her skills as an Alaska Youth Court advisor (already winning several cases). Rayna was recognized today at Mears for the character trait of Self-Discipline! In the weeks and months to come Mears will be recognizing and celebrating students for their demonstration of positive character traits and behaviors. Nice job Rayna!

Spirit Week

SAB is sponsoring Spirit week next week! Please promote and join in the fun!! Please share the attached flyer with students to encourage participation.

Dance

We are also hosting a dance next Friday, February 17 from 3:30-5:00. Tickets will be sold during lunch next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for $3 or if a student buys a team t-shirt next week, they will get a dance ticket for free! We need your help! Please consider signing up to chaperone! Attached is a link to the volunteer sign up.

As part of our ongoing commitment to Student and Staff Safety, Mears Middle School will be conducting a LOCKDOWN ALICE Drill including ALICE protocols, February 15th from 9:05-9:35am. The school will be locked during these drills and will not be open for drop off. Please come before or after the listed time frame. We will be conducting a LOCKDOWN WITH BARRICADE DISCUSSION & PRACTICE. In the event of a real emergency, our RALLY POINTS are Bayshore and/or Kingdom Life Church.

Elizabeth Peratrovich was a Tlingit woman and an Alaska Native Civil Rights Leader who was instrumental in passing the Anti-Discrimination Bill in Alaska. Before her powerful speech in front of a packed legislative gallery, discrimination against Alaska Native people was prevalent.

Mears Families:

Dimond High School cordially invites Mears' 8th graders and their families to the Dimond Freshmen Fair. This occurs on Tuesday, February 28th from 6-7:30 PM at Dimond High School. During this exciting event, students will be able hear from all of the department chairs and many other staff about the exciting curricular and extracurricular offerings at Dimond High.

The Mears Battle of the Books team did an amazing job at the district competition on Wednesday, February 8th! Anya Carpenter, Toril Peterson, Anneliese Patterson and Max Heilman came within two questions of first place winners, Romig.

Battle of the Books requires a big time commitment! Each of the team members read all ten of the books on this years’ list at least once and many of the titles were reread by multiple team members. Plus, bi-weekly meetings during lunch. When asked, all four responded that they will do it again next year.
