Brier Terrace Middle teacher James Sullivan restored a fire truck
For Brier Terrace Middle School technology teacher James Sullivan, the obstacles presented by teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic became a challenge: What could he do to bring teaching to life for students sitting at home?
His solution: Teach students online how to use tools using a vintage fire truck he was restoring in his home garage.
“I had great participation from the class,” said Sullivan, who returned the fire truck fully restored to its original home in Ipswich, Massachusetts earlier this month after an Ipswich company bought it from him. “Everytime I used a tool, I made a little YouTube video.”
He bought the truck, a 1934 Seagrave, for a $500 donation to retired Whatcom County Fire District 7 firefighters in Custer, near the Canadian border. They couldn’t figure out how to make it run. Sullivan determined that the truck needed a new carburetor. This truck needed some tender loving care because it had traveled from state to state since being put out of service.
Once in his garage, he thought its restoration could be incorporated into his technology curriculum – and voila, the idea to create videos was hatched.
“I decided that was going to be my COVID classroom,” he said.
Check out the Career and Technical Education (CTE) video showing how James Sullivan utilized a Fire Truck restoration project for classroom learning:
Annual Notifications – District Family Handbook
The Edmonds School District Family Handbook is an important document with many required annual notifications for families and students. If you haven’t done so already, please check out this year’s handbook:

The Gender Inclusive Schools Board Policy creates an educational environment that is safe and free of discrimination for all students, regardless of gender expression, gender identity, or sex.
In addition, many schools provide a student/family handbook that includes school-specific information.
Opportunity to review health curriculum
Each year families are able to review the district reproductive health and disease prevention curriculum taught in grades 5-12.
The event this year will be a virtual question and answer night and families are encouraged to review the curriculum in advance as there will not be a formal presentation of the materials.
Elementary curriculum is available on our website.
