Steve Babcock enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 2000 and continues to serve.

Our veterans are living history Our veterans are living history

Learn from them, speaker tells students

Col. Steven Babcock urged people to “show up with purpose” and go beyond simply honoring veterans who have given us so much.

Delivering the keynote address Nov. 7, 2025, at the Community Veterans Day Observance at Red Wing High School, the Minnesota National Guard officer talked about leadership, service, dependability and honor. He addressed veterans, school staff, and local residents, but especially the young people in the stands.

“Have a vision for where you’re going – for your education, your career, your family, your community – and chase it with everything you’ve got,” he said, later adding, “Honoring veterans is not only about remembering the past: It’s about how we live today.”

Three noteworthy anniversaries in 2025

Babcock noted that the United States marks three milestone anniversaries this year:

  • 250 years since the Army, Navy and Marine Corps were founded in 1775. “For two and a half centuries, soldiers, sailors and Marines have stood at the heart of our nation’s defense,” he said.
  • 160 years since the Civil War ended in 1865 – “a conflict that nearly shattered the nation, but ultimately renewed its commitment to freedom and unity.”
  • 80 years since the end of World War II. This war, he reminded listeners, reshaped the globe.

“These anniversaries remind us that service is timeless. Each era brings new challenges and in each era Americans have raised their right hands to answer the call,” Babcock said.

After giving a brief history of these milestones and talking about his deployments and service, he thanked veterans, urged community members to go beyond remembrance, and reminded students that their role is vital to ensuring veterans’ legacy and sacrifices endure.

“The veterans in your lives are living history,” Babcock said. “Listen to their stories. You’ll discover lessons about resilience, sacrifice, and service that no textbook can teach.”
