Harwood High School Families -
Harwood’s Music Department and Brian Boyes provided countless experiences over the last month where Harwood’s musicians performed around the state both near and far. These experiences reflect the powerful elements that reflect project based learning elements including student choice, authentic audience and a public product.
The Harwood Jazz Band opened up for Brian Boyes’ band, Saturn People's Sound Collective on May 22nd at Big Picture.
Harwood’s Assembly Band performed for the students at Waitsfield and Brookside Elementary school last week and we discovered that our little’s are quite the dancers!
The Assembly Band, along with Surf Green and The Glam Cowboys headlined our Sonic Futures Youth Music Showcase at Higher Ground this past Friday May 29.
And last but not least the Assembly Band and Highland Jazz performed at the Discover Jazz Festival on Church Street yesterday.
Students in Adventure in Business with the support of their teacher, Sarah Popowicz, spent the last two months developing a business plan for a "pop-up" cafe. They did everything from a needs based analysis to market research, menu development, product pricing, profit margin calculations, logo design, advertisement flyers and worked with a catering consultant on food prep / cooking / health / sanitation and efficient workflow in the cafe. Menu items included specialty grilled cheese sandwiches (The OG, The Plaid and The Highlander), Iced coffee, seltzer and Outshine Frozen Fruit Bars. Prices ranged from $1.00 - $8.00. This experience was another powerful example of student choice, authentic audience, a public product and a community partner. Our professional consultant was Jess Kotch, General Manager of The Old Lantern Event Barn in Charlotte and Farmers & Foragers food truck at Lake Champlain waterfront park.
The “pop up” was so successful that they sold out! We are excited to see what this pilot opportunity yields next year.

Health Office Updates
Sun Safety Reminder
As students spend more time outdoors during the warmer months, protecting their skin from the sun is important. Sunburns can occur even on cloudy days and increase the risk of skin damage over time.
To help keep students safe:
Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before coming to school.
Reapply sunscreen as needed, especially during outdoor activities.
Wear hats, sunglasses, and lightweight protective clothing when possible.
Stay hydrated and seek shade during peak sun hours.
Please note that the School Health Office does not provide or apply sunscreen. Students are encouraged to apply sunscreen at home before school. Students are encouraged to reapply sunscreen, if needed, during afterschool activities or sports.
Counseling
2026-2027 Schedules We are actively working on creating the master schedule for the next school year. Families will receive information via email in August when schedules are ready for review in PowerSchool.

The mentor program wrapped up an exciting school year celebrating relationships and connection between juniors and seniors and seventh and eighth graders. They went bowling and played laser tag as their final activity this school year.

Students across grades 9-12 had a great 2nd Annual Global Conflict Simulation earlier this week. The goal was to consider the broad question: "What are the effects of a Global Conflict?" and it was certainly a learning experience for students considering risk/reward, collaboration, and adaptability in planning.
Community Announcements
This summer, ACLU at HU will be facilitating a 3-day summer camp in Waitsfield on August 12, 13, 14 from 11am-4pm, with each day focused on one big ACLU topic (immigrant rights, gender-affirming care rights, and housing rights) and action projects each day, culminating in a mock trial.
