A Message from the Principals

Dear Families,

As we settle into the routines of fall, October is a wonderful time to strengthen the habits that help students thrive—both at school and at home. One of the most important routines you can build with your child is daily reading time. Whether your student is being read to, reading aloud to you, or enjoying a quiet moment with a good book, these shared reading routines have a lasting impact. They build comprehension, vocabulary, confidence, and most importantly, a love for learning.

We encourage all families to make reading a consistent part of the evening routine—just 15 to 20 minutes a night can make a big difference! Students are learning that they, too, have an important role to play: being responsible for bringing home their books, and setting goals for their own learning. Together, we can help them develop strong habits that will serve them for years to come.

This month also brings one of our most exciting community events—the PTO Jog-a-Thon! This annual tradition is a fun way for students to be active while helping raise funds that directly support our school. We are so grateful to our PTO and all the volunteers who make this event possible. Families who have completed the VIM process are invited to come cheer, volunteer, and support our students as they run for a great cause. Every lap, every donation, and every bit of encouragement helps strengthen our school community.

Thank you for your continued partnership in your child’s education. Your support—at home and at school—makes all the difference.

In collaboration,

Lara Liden and Ashlie Moore

Lunch Menu Changes Lunch Menu Changes

This October the Federal Government implemented new nutritional guidelines for schools. This has caused problems in the supply chain that provides food to Sodexo, who is our food supplier for MSD. Our kitchen has had to make some last minute changes and adjust what is being served based on what is delivered to them.

There have been tears and frustration this week about the changes, but as a whole our students have been very flexible and adaptable.

We would ask that if this has been an issue for your family, that you have a talk with your child about the possibility of being flexible if there is a change. If you have a student who struggles to adjust to a sudden change, or one who has food aversions which make school lunch tricky, its always a sure thing if they bring their own lunch from home.

Milk for All!

Every student, whether getting school lunch or lunch from home, can have a milk. We have both plain and chocolate available.

Eat Your Lunch First

Students who bring a lunch from home are asked to eat what they have before they get a second lunch from the kitchen. We do our best to avoid wasting food.

Talented and Gifted Student Information Talented and Gifted Student Information

Medford District 549c schools are always in the process of identifying students who are academically talented and/or intellectually gifted. Previously identified TAG students remain identified and their services will continue as needed. Students may be nominated for the Talented and Gifted Program (TAG) by the following: national or state test scores, district achievement tests (i-Ready), a teacher, parents, community members, or by self-nomination. After nominations are complete, information will be gathered and a screening committee will screen each student. Students and parents/guardians will be contacted if additional testing is needed. If you wish to obtain information on this program or you have any questions, please contact Ashlie Moore from Lone Pine at 541-842-3820 (ashlie.moore@medford.k12.or.us) or Rebecca Sha, the district Talented and Gifted Specialist at 541-842-1043.

This month our character trait is Responsibility.

Responsibility is understanding that our choices and actions impact others and taking action to make choices with a positive impact. At school we will focus on making good choices, seeing how what we choose affects others.

Publicity Denial Publicity Denial

PUBLICITY DENIAL

Medford School District staff often take photos and videos of students during field trips, school events, sports activities, performances and during classroom instruction to share the work and accomplishments of students. Those accomplishments are shared through the district

website, social media, print publications, fliers, and brochures. The district also works with local news media to promote student work, as well as district projects and initiatives.

If you do not want your student’s image to be published, please visit your school office to fill out a Publicity Denial form. We will make every effort to protect the privacy of your students.

Please note the district cannot guarantee a student’s image will not be published if the student is photographed/videotaped in a large group or crowd setting, such as school assemblies, sports events, and public meetings.

Please contact the Communications Department at msd.communications@medford.k12.or.us with any questions.

This year's International ShakeOut Day is October 16, when millions of people worldwide will participate in earthquake drills at work, school, or home!

The purpose of this day is to increase our earthquake preparedness by having our students practice ways to be safe during an earthquake. Students will practice taking shelter and learning what to do in the event of an actual emergency.

Attendance Attendance

Please remember to contact Lone Pine if your child will not be at school. State law requires that

schools ensure that a parent or guardian is notified by the end of the school day on any day that a

child has an unplanned absence. That means that if a parent does not call us to let us know that

their child will be absent from school, we must make contact with that parent in person or by

phone regarding the absence.
