Loogootee Invitational Champions

The Sullivan girls’ tennis team continued its outstanding season with a series of impressive victories, highlighted by a championship performance at the Loogootee Invitational and an undefeated Western Indiana Conference season.

The Lady Arrows captured the Loogootee Invitational championship on May 9, defeating Evansville Central and Evansville Mater Dei to bring home the tournament trophy.

Sullivan opened the day with a dominant 5-0 victory over Evansville Central to advance to the championship round. The Arrows then defeated Evansville Mater Dei 3-2 in a tightly contested finals match to secure the tournament title and improve to 14-2 on the season.

In the opening round against Evansville Central, Sullivan swept all five varsity positions. Ally McKinney, Mercedes Ferree, and Raylee Hobbs all earned convincing singles victories, while both doubles teams also picked up wins.

The championship round against Mater Dei proved much more challenging, but Sullivan’s singles lineup once again delivered. McKinney dominated at #1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory, while Ferree battled through a dramatic super tiebreaker win to clinch the team championship. Hobbs also earned a strong straight-set victory at #3 singles.

Coach shared his appreciation for Athletic Director Zach Whitkanack for helping the team find an opportunity to compete after schedule changes threatened the weekend.

“We got to play some new teams, got some great practice, and brought a big trophy home with us,” he said.

The coach also praised several standout performances throughout the invitational, including the continued success of freshman Raylee Hobbs, who improved to 16-0 on the season at the time, and Mercedes Ferree’s comeback performance in the deciding match against Mater Dei.

“Mercedes never gave up and she did a wonderful job changing her match’s momentum to earn the win for herself and for the team,” he said.

Sullivan Defeats Terre Haute South

The Lady Arrows followed up the tournament championship with another major victory, defeating Terre Haute South 3-2 on May 11 to improve to 15-2 on the season.

Ally McKinney and Mercedes Ferree controlled the singles courts, each earning straight-set victories. The deciding point came from the #1 doubles team of Izzie Jenkins and Annie Dugan, who earned a key win under pressure.

Coach called the victory one of the program’s notable accomplishments.

“As I write this, I am thinking how rare it has been for a Sullivan tennis coach to be able to text our AD after the match that we beat Terre Haute South in tennis,” he said. “South is well coached and they are always one of the strongest teams on our schedule.”

The coach also praised Jenkins and Dugan for repeatedly delivering in critical matches throughout the season.

“They are making a habit of coming through when the team needs them most and I appreciate that very much,” he added.

Undefeated WIC Champions

On May 12, Sullivan completed an undefeated conference season with a 5-0 victory over Owen Valley, officially securing the Western Indiana Conference championship with a perfect 6-0 conference record.

The Lady Arrows swept every varsity position in the match. Ally McKinney, Mercedes Ferree, and Raylee Hobbs each won convincingly in singles play, while both doubles teams also earned victories.

Sullivan also defeated Owen Valley 4-0 in junior varsity action.

The conference title marks the ninth WIC championship in the program’s 51-year history.

“With our win over Owen Valley, we did just that,” the coach said. “This accomplishment takes consistency and focus throughout the season. One bad match can take it all away. I am very proud of our players for making it happen.”

The coach also highlighted the growth of the doubles lineup and the continued success of Alexis Smith and Addy Hunt, who remained undefeated in varsity play.

Sullivan improved to 16-2 overall and continued its strong momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Exploring Careers in Healthcare and Technology

First grade students welcomed two special guests as part of Mrs. McCammon’s Month of Careers activities.

Mrs. Alumbaugh visited the classroom to share about her career as an X-ray technician. Students learned how X-rays work and were especially amazed by the heavy lead apron used for protection. The visit gave students an exciting look into the healthcare field and inspired future medical professionals.

Students also enjoyed a visit from Carlisle’s own technology expert, Tim Roberts. Mr. Roberts gave first graders a hands-on look inside a computer and explained how the different parts work together to keep technology running. The students loved exploring the “guts” of a computer and learning more about careers in technology.

A huge thank you to both guest speakers for taking the time to invest in our students and share their knowledge!
