Spotlight on PLC Spotlight on PLC

Welcome Back!

Welcome back! The PLC Committee wishes you a Happy New Year and a fabulous start to 2024. Let’s make this the best year yet, together. In case you missed it, here are the best of tips, tricks, and reflections from 2023.

  • Finite vs Infinite Games (the first PLC spotlight of 2023!)

  • Using WYN for early and timely interventions

  • Develop Norms

  • Deep dive into Learning Targets

  • Advice from an Advisor - Sarah S.

  • Sparking a Connection - Marta R

  • High Expectation Teaching

  • Intentions - Adam H

Keep in mind that you have students in your class that have had a wonderful break and some that have had a very difficult break. There are students who were surrounded by family, and some that spent the majority of their time alone or online. There will be students who received gifts galore, and some who got very little. Sleep schedules are interrupted at best, and demolished at worst. Pay attention to how students walk in on day one. Support those students that need it. Help other students and staff to build perspective, empathy, and understanding.

A return from break is also a great time to revisit class norms and PLT norms. The break provides a catalyst for change, if that is what is needed. It is an important time to re-teach essential routines in the classroom and commit to new structures in PLTs. The time is now.

Let’s start 2024 strong, together.

WMS i-Ready Data WMS i-Ready Data

Below is a snapshot of some i-Ready instructional data from the whole school

  • Upper left is the percentage of lessons passed as a school by subject. Alerts will show up in the i-Ready dashboard if a student is not passing the same lesson topic multiple times.

  • Lower left is the total time and lessons passed as a school so far this school year, let’s see how big we can get them this year (could be fun to show your homeroom)!

  • Right side is a quick graph of how many students met their minutes goal for a previous week (i-Ready sees the best growth if students are above 30 minutes per subject per week). These percentages were calculated in a new way to more accurately reflect the percentage of students meeting goal minutes.

Staff Shout-Outs Staff Shout-Outs

Shout out to…

Jason LaFlash for all of his hard work on organizing the DC trip throughout the year and making it a meaningful experience for the 8th graders.

Shad Fanta for being a supportive WTA building rep and willing to step in for those that need it.

Bridget Marsh for going above and beyond for students and being a helpful teammate.

Camryn Booms for being supportive of her students and meeting their needs, being creative and being a supportive member of the staff.

Jason Kaltenberg for his dedication to his students, his friendly face in the hallway, and having a positive outlook.

PE Staff for their endless flexibility with the large variety of student needs, schedule changes, and different situations they respond to, always doing it in the name of what's best for students.

Patti is always a positive face in the office. She works tirelessly to decorate the building's beautiful bulletin boards, as well as the office doors/displays. She also works hard to make sure that every teacher has coverage when we can't be here. I am sure she does many other things, but I just know that I appreciate her for all that she does to keep the building safe, and happy.

Cathy Keenan for being endlessly patient with her students that can be a little "extra". She works really hard to build and maintain relationships, and her students both respect and trust her.

Jonathon Wild for often being the "calm in the storm." He approaches situations with students with an unbiased, calm, and confident attitude. He is always looking to help solve problems while building student agency.

Lindsey Hying for being such a strong advocate for the students she supports. She relentlessly encourages ALL students to put forth their best effort and is a patient guide when students are navigating challenges. Thanks for all you do to support our students and teachers, Lindsey!

Breydis Slinger for being such an asset in our building. Her knowledge and wealth of wisdom is of great benefit to our staff and students. She is always willing to share best practices in working with not only our EL students but all our students.

Sam Pilsner and Terri Miller

-for organizing the Race to Winter Break and providing the opportunity for a little fun before winter break!

- for doing a great job and putting in a lot of time and energy as Student Council advisors. Their work to make the week before break fun and special for students and staff has not gone unnoticed. Thank you!

Autumn Pedersen for "Saving the Day(s)" while I was out sick and taking an IEP and 504 for me! I appreciate you jumping in!

Hailey Bond for getting our middle school forensics program going again after a two year hiatus! Hailey spent hours this summer and fall learning about the program and planning for the season and really hit the ground running for the first meeting. She brings a great energy and positivity to our students and I'm so excited that she is taking over this really great extracurricular activity. Our students are lucky to have her!

Janet Steck for how much she cares about kids and our school! Just one example of this is how she uses her time and money to purchase fabric for kids who can't afford it or who make a mistake and need more for the sewing unit. Thank you for your dedication!

John Ehle for all you are doing to lead the 8th grade math department this year after a big shift in staff. Thank you for sharing your expertise, materials, slides, accuracy checks, and so much more! Also, thank you for always being willing to answer questions!

Michael Place for always helping out his colleagues with a smile on his face. Also, he is always really positive with his students.

Ty Jury for solving problems all day without knowing when and where those problems will happen. And somehow, he still stays positive throughout it all. What a guy!

Cathy Keenan for being awesome. She is super supportive of all of her students and is an amazing friend/colleague. She works her so hard to make sure our curriculum is engaging for all students. Yay Cathy!

Student Council and Office Staff for the breakfasts and treats leading into Winter Break! They were thoughtful, a nice surprise, and so very much appreciated!

Mike Zibell for his time and effort in making our daily announcements and Words of Wisdom. I love the creativity and ways he tries to engage our students. They bring a smile to my face with the backgrounds and ways he infuses himself into the videos!

Take a Break - Literally

We have been going steady at high speed since school started in the fall. Our days have been filled with planning, teaching, assessing, grading, caring, nurturing, listening…a never-ending list of “ings.” Winter break is now within reach, and I suggest we all pause and break up with “busy.” Our minds and bodies need respite, and we need to slow down. We need restoration and renewal.

I’m sharing John Spencer’s video, Treat Your Winter Break as a Real Break, to remind you of the importance of permitting ourselves to really take a break. You deserve it!

The Coaches Corner will resume in 2024, but for now, I’m taking a break.

I wish you all the best in the new year.
