The Au Gres-Sims School District
www.ags-schools.org
Au Gres-Sims Families,
We have three modes of operation at AGS: 1. NORMAL OPERATING MODE 2. SECURE MODE 3. LOCKDOWN. It is important to note that we spend 99+% of our school time in that first category, with the vast majority of that less than 1% conducting safety drills. It is very rare for us to shift out of normal operating mode, but we practice the procedure frequently, and utilize it when necessary. NORMAL operating mode is our standard safety procedures, with all doors closed and locked during the day, regular class changes and bathroom breaks, etc. SECURE MODE means that classroom doors are all closed and locked and students are not to be in the hallways. During SECURE MODE instruction continues in the classroom. LOCKDOWN is our highest level of security and is used when there is a threat to safety. This can be at the school or in the surrounding vicinity. During LOCKDOWN all doors are closed and locked, the NightLock safety device is installed to barricade students and staff in place, instruction stops, and all people are to shelter in place out of sight and sound.
The situation that occurred this week was a short activation of SECURE MODE. We use this mode of operation when there is a pressing situation that needs to be addressed and requires that we not have interference from any bystanders. In many cases, and indeed in this one, the time of day and location of the situation, and not necessarily the severity, dictates the need for SECURE MODE. Keeping all students in classrooms during SECURE MODE allows for the people addressing the difficult situations to do so in a timely manner, while maintaining the integrity of the people involved.
In our situation earlier this week, student safety was never at risk, but there was a delicate situation that we were able to resolve quickly and efficiently because we were able to shift into SECURE MODE for a short period of time. I hope this summary gives some clarity to the no doubt surprising notification you received at the beginning of the week.

Last week the Career Center hosted their annual end of year Awards Day. We had two individuals who earned the “Outstanding Student” award at this ceremony. Congratulations to
Analeis Ming in the Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy/Sports Medicine class and Charles Schnettler in the Precision Machining class!
So in today’s day and age, we all know that kids love to be on technology. The question is, “How much screen time is okay for my kids?”. Although this is a family decision, see this link to see what the experts say for kids 5 and under.
It is no secret that exercise can do wonders for our health. Exercise is good for losing weight, preventing illnesses, improving heart health, relieving stress, and boosting well-being. The benefits of exercise also affect the brain in numerous ways. Exercise improves brain plasticity which directly affects cognitive functions such as memory and learning. Exercise also lowers the risk of cognitive decline and dementia and helps to prevent diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia. Exercise also helps to boost memory, attention, and information processing. Exercise can lessen symptoms of anxiety and depression, while also indirectly helping to manage pain and stress. Whether you prefer low, moderate, or high-intense workouts, the benefits of physical activity for overall health are undeniable. So, what is the proper amount? Experts recommend 2 to 2.5 hours of moderate activity weekly – approximately 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day– or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (slightly over an hour). The choice is yours. Though the literature is full of evidence on how exercise affects the brain, there is no clear answer on which activity is the best. So, the big takeaway here is to get moving. No doubt, your brain will thank you!

Mrs. Steinbauer's Weekly Update
As the school year winds down, the final month is a busy and exciting time for both students and staff. We wrap up our academic work with our curriculum and by completing benchmark assessments, giving us a chance to reflect on and celebrate the growth our students have made throughout the year. Looking at the growth our students have made always brings pride here in the district as we see the hard work of your students pay off. Alongside these final tasks, the calendar fills with fun activities—including our testing incentive BBQ and inflatable day, field trips, fun days, and field events—that bring the whole school community together. For our seniors, these weeks are especially meaningful as they savor their final moments of high school. It’s a time to reflect on friendships, memories, and the journey they’ve taken to get to this point. Between senior trips, special events, and graduation preparations, they enjoy a series of milestones that mark the close of one chapter and the exciting start of another. Soon they’ll gather with family and friends for open houses and celebrations, before heading out into the big world to pursue their dreams, careers, and next adventures with confidence and pride. It is hard to believe that we are talking about the final weeks of school but here we are. Be sure to savor each moment with your student especially your seniors as these last few weeks will fly by and present many important moments to remember.
Chronic Absenteeism
Improved attendance plays a crucial role in supporting student growth, both academically and socially. When students are present consistently, they have more opportunities to engage with lessons, participate in discussions, and build meaningful connections with their teachers and peers. Regular attendance helps reinforce learning, making it easier for students to stay on track and master new concepts without gaps that can slow progress. Beyond academics, showing up every day fosters important habits like responsibility, perseverance, and community involvement—skills that benefit students long after they leave the classroom.
While we wait for the attendance data for the entire school year to come to a close, we hope that it will show what we are feeling, that students were in attendance more. We tried to encourage students to be in attendance this year as each day is important to their learning and we hope that this effort positively impacts your student when they complete their coursework for the year as well as take their benchmark assessments.
Weekly Update from the Dean's Den
High school math can feel complex—but it’s also where students start seeing how math truly connects to the real world. Whether it’s managing money, analyzing data, or preparing for college entrance exams, math is a life skill, not just a school subject.
This week, we’re focusing on how families can encourage high school students to apply their math knowledge in real-life situations that build both confidence and independence
How to Support Math at Home:
Make Financial Literacy a Priority
Have your teen help with real budgeting—groceries, gas, or planning for a trip.
Discuss credit card interest, saving goals, or how loans work.
“If you earn $200/month and want to save 25%, how much will that be in 6 months?”
Encourage Math in Decision-Making
Compare mobile plans, car insurance quotes, or savings accounts.
Help them understand data like APR, interest rates, or payment plans.
“This laptop is $950 with 5% sales tax. What’s the total?”
Use Graphing & Algebra in Real Life
Graph progress toward a fitness goal, or model gas mileage over time.
Let them explore slope, rate of change, and equations through everyday scenarios.
Highlight STEM Careers
Talk about how math is used in fields like engineering, health, architecture, or tech.
Invite them to research a career and present how math applies in that field.
Prep for College or Career Readiness
Encourage light, ongoing SAT/ACT practice, especially with math word problems.
Use tools like Edmentum.
Let’s remind our high schoolers that math gives them power—the power to plan, to solve, and to make smart choices. 📊💰📐

AGS Health Clinic News
It is only a matter of days, with only the final inspection on the list, until the keys are handed over to our new clinic and Sterling Area Health Center can start moving in the equipment. The AGS clinic will be open soon!
The new anticipated opening of the clinic is mid-April to early May and we will update that as we get closer. Prior to the clinic opening we will be sending home paperwork packets and will be making a number of announcements about that process. There is nothing to look for yet, just the continued progress of our clinic construction.
