PCHS WeeklyUpdatesSeptember 17, 2021

Message from Principals McBride & Woods

PCHS Community,

It's been an interesting week here at PCHS. Lots of goodness, and also some challenges, one of which we reached out directly to you about yesterday. Thank you for speaking with your children about the destructive Tik Tok challenge. Today was a better day in this regard. We believe strongly your partnership positively influences moments like this, and we thank you for it once again. Please keep the conversations going with your children about responsible social media use and help us to continue encouraging that "see something, say something" mantra.

Next, bus driver and substitute teacher shortages are a challenge everywhere right now, including in Pinckney. If you know anyone who might be interested in either of these roles, encourage them to explore opportunities here: https://www.pinckneypirates.org/page/human-resources These shortages result in undesirable situations such as no athletic transportation, longer bus routes, teachers covering their colleagues on their prep hours, etc. We'd love some new team members!

Finally, we are in this together. There are a variety of reasons we are struggling to hire/retain bus drivers, subs, etc. One of those reasons is the treatment they receive. Masks are federally mandated on public transportation. Bus drivers have to enforce this. Give those bus drivers grace by ensuring your student understands this requirement and follows through on it. Let's assume good intentions when decisions are made, and trust they are informed by the most up-to-date guidance from our district, county, state, and national education and health guidance. We are all doing our very best to create the best educational environment we can for this community that we love. Good vibes only!

We knew this year was going to bring with it some new and unique challenges, especially social-emotional ones. This is not just isolated to children. We're seeing this play out through the examples described above, among other realities. Let's continue working together for the best of our kids.

Now, bring on the beautiful weekend!

Latest MDHHS Guidelines for Managing Covid Exposure

Per Rick Todd's email communication today, we will be using the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services Covid Guidance (for now). You can view those guidelines here.

In the Event of Quarantine - How to Engage in Learning from Afar

All of our teachers are using Google Classroom this year. Google Classrooms will be updated regularly and in a way that students can access resources and assignments from anywhere with the internet.

Every teacher's Google Classroom will be organized in the following ways:

  • A daily agenda posted in the Stream (which is the landing page of the Classroom), and potentially in the Classwork area
  • Syllabus posted in a Classroom Materials section in Classwork
  • Resources and assignments organized in a logical manner in Classwork (i.e. by day, week, unit, or project)

We will be working together as a staff to continue to improve our Google Classroom approach so that students can continue their learning with relative ease if quarantined. Your feedback will continue to be appreciated to inform this process.

A Note Re: Quarantine Attendance

Students in quarantine will have their attendance proactively entered by our Main Office. It will be marked with an "M" with the note of Covid quarantine, so teachers know this is the situation and can support these students accordingly.

A reminder that the best defense against quarantine is vaccination!

VIP Reality Tour

YOU ARE INVITED!!!

The Livingston County Community Alliance (L.C.C.A.) is a local coalition whose mission is to unite the Livingston County commUNITY to reduce and prevent substance abuse and live a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. By providing education and awareness the LCCA seeks to ensure a thriving Livingston County commUNITY.

The L.C.C.A. has partnered with Candle, Inc. to bring their program Reality Tour to Livingston County in an effort to further education to families and community members.

Reality Tour follows a teen through dramatic scenes that have the potential to happen to anyone. In a video created by local teens, participants will see a party, overdose, arrest, jail, and finally a funeral scene. Following the short video created by local high school students, information will be provided to parent and child about local drug trends, ways to be on the same page, and resources to stay drug free. To conclude the tour, participants will hear from law enforcement and voice in recovery.

Reality Tour allows parents and youth to get on the same page about expectations, provides education and resources, and allows participants to hear from people that have been directly affected by drugs and alcohol.

The L.C.C.A. will be hosting a virtual VIP tour on Wednesday, September 22 at 4:30pm. As someone that works with youth and/or families in the community, we ask that you come to this tour to understand the impact it can have on our community. Please register at https://viprealitytour2021.eventbrite.com.
