Building Blocks
Building Blocks for Math, Grades K-2
This is a two part series, and participants are encouraged to complete the Early Numeracy training before completing the Number Sense training.
Early Numeracy
Students need to understand numbers, the names for these numbers, how to count, one-to-one correspondence, and many other skills that fall under early numeracy. Participants will look at what early numeracy is, why it is important, and what they can do to increase early numeracy skills in their students. They will look at the role games can have on students learning skills that fall under early numeracy. There will be time for collaboration among teachers and an opportunity to share out things they are currently use that seem to be yielding positive results with early numeracy skills in their students.
Number Sense and Using Games
Along with early numeracy skills, students also need to build their number sense skills in order to find success in mathematics. Number sense is a skill that needs to be supplemented into the classroom in order for students to build their number sense, and apply it when solving problems. Participants will look at what number sense really is, why it is so important to supplement number sense activities in their classroom, and how they can increase number sense skills in their students. Time will also be given to look at the impact of games on teaching math concepts in grades K-2, as well as some time to explore and build their own games.
