Six weeks have already flown by, and our Mavericks are well on their way! By now, new classrooms are starting to feel familiar, routines are taking shape, and we are learning more about the unique strengths and needs of each student. Maverick Matters was created to keep our families connected along the way by sharing resources, parent learning opportunities, helpful tips, and information you can use at home and school. We're glad you're on this journey with us. Strong Mavericks grow from strong school-family connections!

Maverick Moments: Celebrate the Small Wins Maverick Moments: Celebrate the Small Wins

Progress doesn't always arrive in giant leaps. Sometimes progress is asking for help, trying something difficult, making a new friend, remembering a routine, reading a challenging word, or getting through a tough morning. Take time to notice those moments and celebrate them! Every child's journey looks different, and comparing today's progress to yesterday's can be far more meaningful than comparing one child to another. Small steps are still progress, and they're worth celebrating.

Different Strengths. One Maverick Family. Different Strengths. One Maverick Family.

Every Maverick brings unique strengths, abilities, interests, and ways of learning to our school community. October gives us an opportunity to celebrate those differences and remind our children that everyone deserves to feel included, valued, and supported. Inclusion is more than simply being together. It means creating opportunities for every student to participate, build friendships, contribute, and experience a true sense of belonging. Our differences make our Maverick community stronger!

Reading together is valuable even when your child isn't the one reading every word. Take turns reading pages, read a favorite book aloud, listen to an audiobook together, talk about new vocabulary, or pause and predict what might happen next. For children who find reading difficult, these experiences provide opportunities to enjoy stories and build language and comprehension without making every interaction with a book feel like a test. Most importantly, help your child discover that reading is about more than getting every word right.

Fall Changes and Routines Fall Changes and Routines

Fall brings lots of fun to an elementary campus, but special events, celebrations, dress-up days, assemblies, and schedule changes can also be challenging for children who depend on predictable routines. Preparing your child ahead of time can help. Talk about upcoming events, mark special days on a calendar, explain what may be different, and remind your child about the parts of the day that will remain the same. A little preparation can help an exciting but unfamiliar day feel much more manageable.

What Is an Accommodation?

An accommodation is a support that helps a student access learning or show what they know without changing the learning expectation itself. Accommodations are individualized based on a student's needs and may look different from one child to another. If your child receives accommodations, ask the team not only what the accommodations are, but also when and how they are used.

October Family Challenge:
This month, catch your Maverick doing something independently that you might normally help with. Maybe it's carrying their own backpack, ordering at a restaurant, cleaning up, asking for help, choosing their clothes, or completing part of a routine independently. Notice it, name it, and celebrate it! Independence grows one small opportunity at a time.

Questions are welcome! Strong partnerships begin with communication, and families should never feel like they have to wait for a meeting to ask a question or share something important. Your child's teacher, case manager, service provider, counselor, and campus administrators are all part of the team supporting your Maverick. If you're not sure where to start, reach out and we'll help connect you with the right person.
