Celebrating Black History Month

This week Gompers recognizes Creola Katherine Johnson

Creola Katherine Johnson (August 26, 1918 – February 24, 2020) was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. During her 33-year career at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist."

Johnson's work included calculating trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths for Project Mercury spaceflights, including those for astronauts Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and rendezvous paths for the Apollo Lunar Module and command module on flights to the Moon. Her calculations were also essential to the beginning of the Space Shuttle program, and she worked on plans for a mission to Mars. She was known as a "human computer" for her tremendous mathematical capability and ability to work with space trajectories with such little technology and recognition at the time.

In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2016, she was presented with the Silver Snoopy Award by NASA astronaut Leland D. Melvin and a NASA Group Achievement Award. She was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson as a lead character in the 2016 film Hidden Figures. In 2019, Johnson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress.[5] In 2021, she was inducted posthumously into the National Women's Hall of Fame.

Student ID

Safety is a top priority at Gompers and District 86. Part of that safety is the requirement of all staff, students, and visitors wearing an ID at all times at school. On Monday, all students without an ID will be asked to bring their ID daily. However, starting on Tuesday any student without an ID will be charged $5 for an ID replacement. Temporary IDs are no longer being issued due to safety issues. Please ensure your student brings their student ID daily.

IAR Assessment

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the state assessment for all students in grades 3-8 that measures students’ progress in English Language Arts and Math. Our students will take the IAR during March 10-21, 2025. Please ensure that your child gets a good night’s rest and eats a healthy breakfast before the test. If you have any questions, contact your child’s teacher.

Additionally, the ISA tests for 8th grade will begin the week of March 31st. It is essential for all students to be present and perform their best on these tests. Consistent school attendance during the two weeks before and after spring break is one of the best ways to ensure your student performs well and does not fall behind. Your student has been practicing and preparing for these tests with their teachers through all their classes. Let's make their hard work pay off. Thank you for making every effort to ensure your student is in attendance during these critical weeks of school.

Spring Break is March 24-28

Although the weather outside may not evoke thoughts of spring break, it is only five weeks away. This time of year, attendance can become an issue due to various factors, such as weather conditions, common illnesses, and extended vacations. We encourage all families to focus on maintaining consistent daily attendance over the next five weeks. Each day of attendance provides valuable opportunities for learning, growth, connection, and experiences that cannot be replaced.

If you or your student need assistance in ensuring regular school attendance, please reach out to our counselors and social workers, whose contact information is listed at the bottom of this newsletter. Remember, attendance matters, and we appreciate your support!

Early pick up

There are times that you need to pick up your student early from school for a doctor's appointment or another important need. Due to our dismissal, bussing line, and end of the day traffic in and out of the building, all early pickups must be completed prior to 2:15 pm. After the 2:15 pm time, parents must join the regular carline at the back of the school for the regular 2:35 pm dismissal time. Please plan accordingly so your student is picked up prior to 2:15 pm when necessary and remember that students are not called down until you arrive and sign them out. Thank you!

Attendance Matters!

Do your best to keep your children healthy. Dress your children warmly in the cold weather and encourage them to wash their hands regularly. Handwashing is a huge preventative measure against illness. Also, eating a healthy breakfast can give the body the energy it needs for the day. The healthier students remain, the less school they’ll have to miss due to illness!
