Advisory Lessons

Dear Families,

At Oxford Community Schools, we value the importance of social, emotional, and physical well-being for all of our students. This year, in addition to the social-emotional lessons taught to our students in advisory, we have added 2 lessons related to personal safety. The opt out form for Lesson 1 was sent in November and the students were presented the lesson during advisory. Next week, we will introduce lesson 2. In this lesson, we will be teaching students skills and strategies to help them stay safe from dangerous or abusive situations. Lesson concepts include:

Reporting & Refusing: Ways to Stay Safe

Students will have an introduction to the meaning of consent and how to say no in an uncomfortable situation. Students will review the resources and where to turn to for support.

If you would like to opt your child out of these lessons, please complete this form by 5/12/23.

SAEBRS

Oxford Middle School and the entire Oxford district are committed to supporting academic progress and students' social, emotional, and behavioral growth.

Again this year at OMS, we will be completing a universal screening tool to assess the academic, social, and emotional learning skills of all students. The Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (SAEBRS) is a tool that measures common behavioral criteria in Social Behavior, Academic Behavior, and Emotional Behavior. The data will be used internally to look for trends across the school and grade levels and to develop instructional next steps to support students. As with all student data, we maintain strict levels of confidentiality.

In the next few weeks, both students and teachers will use SAEBRS. The screener will ask students 19 questions (questions are below). This will take place during advisory the week of May 15th. The screener is taken on a Chromebook and will last no longer than 10 minutes. In addition, each student will have one teacher complete a rating scale for him/her. To complete each SAEBRS item, the teacher will indicate how frequently the student has displayed each behavior (as described within each item) during the previous month.

Students and teachers are not new to screeners. At OMS, we use FastBridge for reading and math three times a year. This data is collected to help plan academic interventions and accelerated classes for students.

No student will be required to complete the SAEBRS screener and there is no penalty for students who do not complete the survey.

If you would like to opt your child out of this screener, please complete this form by 5/12/23.

During an advisory lesson, OMS students learned about another way to anonymously report Bullying Behaviors.

Our students earn Wild Cat Cash for their positive behaviors and they use the cash on Wednesdays at the Wild Cat Shack. We surveyed our students and have created an Amazon Wishlist with some of the items that were suggested. Click the link below to help support us recognizing their positive behaviors!
