Dear AFA Community:

Week 7 at AFA

Welcome back from Fall Break! We hope our students and families had an opportunity to rest, recharge, and enjoy some time together. As we head into Week 7 at Augsburg Fairview Academy, we are continuing our focus on Belonging and the importance of creating a school community where every student feels known, supported, connected, and valued.

With the second half of Quarter 1 underway, we encourage students to stay engaged in their learning, build on their successes, and take advantage of the support available to help them finish the quarter strong.

Thank You for Attending Fall Academic Conferences!

We want to extend a sincere thank you to all of our parents, guardians, and families who participated in Fall Academic Conferences last week! We appreciate the time you took to connect with our staff, celebrate your student's accomplishments, discuss areas for growth, and work together to support their academic success.

At AFA, we know that strong relationships between students, families, and school staff make a difference. Your involvement, communication, and partnership are essential to helping our students succeed. If you were unable to attend conferences or would like to continue a conversation about your student's progress, we encourage you to reach out to our staff. We are always happy to connect!

Families interested in a more detailed review of graduation progress, credits, or graduation requirements are encouraged to schedule an individual meeting with Ms. Kelly J.

You're Invited! Haunted House Family Night – Thursday, October 29!

Belonging, Respect, and Our School Community

As we continue our Quarter 1 focus on Belonging, we want to take a moment to reinforce what it means to be part of the AFA community. Last week, during Indigenous Peoples' Day, our school experienced some difficult conversations and interactions surrounding race, culture, and identity. These moments remind us of the importance of creating a school environment where all students feel safe, respected, represented, and valued.

At AFA, we believe students should have opportunities to ask questions, share perspectives, challenge ideas, and engage in meaningful conversations about race, identity, culture, and history. These conversations are an important part of learning and growing together. At the same time, we have a responsibility to ensure that these conversations happen in ways that respect the dignity and humanity of others. Racially harmful language, threats, intimidation, and behavior that makes others feel unsafe are not acceptable in our school community.

We also recognize that acknowledging and celebrating one culture does not diminish the importance of another. Our commitment to honoring Indigenous peoples, histories, and cultures exists alongside our commitment to recognizing and celebrating the diverse identities, histories, and experiences of all our students.

Our responsibility as educators is not to avoid difficult conversations, but to help students develop the skills to navigate them thoughtfully, respectfully, and safely. We will continue working with students to strengthen these skills, address and repair harm when it occurs, and build a school community where belonging is more than something we talk about. It is something we practice through our words, actions, and relationships every day. We appreciate the partnership of our families as we continue this important work together.

Staying on Track During Quarter 1

With academic conferences behind us, this is a great time for students and families to build on the conversations and goals established during conferences.

We encourage students and families to:

  • Check PowerSchool regularly to monitor grades, attendance, and missing assignments.

  • Connect with teachers about opportunities to complete missing work, improve grades, and receive additional support.

  • Prioritize consistent attendance. Being at school and participating in learning each day makes a difference.

  • Set goals for the remainder of Quarter 1 and identify small, manageable steps toward achieving them.

  • Celebrate growth and progress. Success includes academic achievement, personal development, and the relationships and skills students build along the way.

At AFA, we recognize that every student's educational journey looks different. Our goal is to meet students where they are, help them recognize their strengths, and provide the individualized support they need to be successful. We also encourage students to ask for help when they need it. Whether that means checking in with a teacher, connecting with a trusted adult, or developing a plan to get caught up on assignments, our staff are here to help. We want every student to finish Quarter 1 feeling proud of their growth and confident about what comes next.

Thank you again to all of our families who joined us for academic conferences and for the many ways you continue to support your students and our school community.

Warmly,

Ms. Heidi
Executive Director

October is LGBTQ+ History Month

October is LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to recognize the contributions, resilience, and stories of LGBTQ+ people throughout history. Founded in 1994 by Missouri teacher Rodney Wilson, the month also includes National Coming Out Day on October 11.

At AFA, we honor those who have helped advance equity and inclusion and remain committed to creating a school where every student feels seen, valued, and safe to be who they are.
