Nurse's Notes

February is American Heart Health Month

Taking care of your heart is one of the most important ways to feel great and stay healthy. The small, heart-healthy decisions you make each day can lead to big benefits, helping you live a longer, happier life.

Did you know the heart is a muscle about the size of your fist? It works hard every day to pump blood filled with oxygen and nutrients throughout your body while also helping to remove waste. For school-aged kids, the heart beats anywhere from 60 to 118 times per minute when resting—and even faster when you're active.

Exercise is the best way to keep the heart strong and healthy. Kids can stay active in fun ways every day! They can turn up their favorite music and have a dance party, or grab some friends for a game of tag. Going for a bike ride or jumping rope are great ways to get moving, while playing sports like soccer or basketball can keep them active and build teamwork.

One easy step to healthier eating is to include fruits and vegetables in every meal and snack. Whether fresh, frozen, canned, or dried, all forms of fruits and veggies count! Plus, the more colorful your plate, the better—so try adding a rainbow of colors to your meals to nourish both your body and your life.

Preventing the Spread of Germs This Winter

  • Wash hands frequently: Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching shared surfaces.

  • Use hand sanitizer: If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes: Always cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue away and wash your hands.

  • Avoid touching your face: Try to keep hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent germs from entering your body.

  • Stay home when sick: Keep children home if they show signs of illness, such as fever, cough, or sore throat, until they are symptom-free for 24 hours.

  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces: Clean doorknobs, light switches, and other commonly used surfaces regularly to reduce germs.

  • Avoid close contact: Limit close contact with people who are sick.

If your child continues to appear fatigued, pale, lacks appetite, struggles with solid foods, or just doesn’t seem like themselves, PLEASE KEEP THEM HOME from school. Some viral illnesses may require more time for full recovery before your child is ready to return. Sending your child to school to “see if they improve” risks exposing other students and staff to contagious illnesses. This can spread the illness to classmates, their siblings, and family members.

When to Keep Your Child Home:

  • Keep your child home from school if they have a fever, especially in combination with a cough, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, congestion, runny nose, or sore throat. They should remain home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications.

  • Keep your child home from school for 24 hours if they have nausea, vomiting or diarrhea(return when tolerating a normal diet).

  • Keep your child home for 24 hours after receiving medication for treatment of illness/infection(such as antibiotics or eye ointments).

Cold Weather Preparation:

  • We want to be able to send students outside for as long as possible despite the chilly temps. Please be sure students dress in layers for school- they need warm weather gear for outdoor play even when the inside temperature is warm. If students do not have appropriate cold weather/snow gear their outside activities may be somewhat limited so they stay warm and safe.

  • If you wear your boots to school, do not forget to pack your sneakers for Physical Education class!

  • A change of dry clothing(socks, pants and shoes) in backpacks can be helpful and keep students comfortable after snowy recess play.

  • Please remember to send students to school with a refillable water bottle. Hydration will help with dry skin and chapped lips.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child's health, or if you're unsure whether they should attend school, please don't hesitate to contact me.
