Rod's Random Thoughts
Happy Monday Hornets!
We’re kicking off our first full week of school with plenty to celebrate. Our sports teams are off to a fantastic start—congratulations to the Football Team on their big win over Decatur and to our Girls Soccer Team for their exciting victory against Bonney Lake, and the Boys Tennis Team for their win against Steilacoom HS. ! It’s been great to see our student-athletes already showing grit, teamwork, and school pride. A huge thank you as well to everyone who joined us for Open House last week. Your support and partnership make all the difference as we set the tone for a successful year. We’re looking forward to keeping that spirit going strong as we dive into this first full week together.
Monday marks our 1st Monday of the year and our new homeroom schedule. The purpose of homeroom is for teachers and students to get ready for the week ahead. This Monday students will be receiving training on the new Securly Digital Hall Pass. We are planning to switch over to the digital pass next Monday, September 15.
The Article of the Week from The Hechinger Report highlights how chronic absenteeism has become a lasting challenge in U.S. schools since the pandemic, with nearly one in four students missing significant amounts of school in 2023–24—still far above pre-pandemic levels. Researchers note that absenteeism affects students across income, race, and achievement levels, with boredom, mental health struggles, shifting cultural norms around attendance, and easier access to online learning all contributing to the problem. While missing school no longer always leads to failing grades, experts warn that persistent absenteeism undermines long-term habits and workforce readiness, raising concerns that today’s attendance crisis could have lasting consequences beyond academics.
Go Hornets!

EHS Digital Hall Pass
Enumclaw High School is moving to a digital hall pass system called Securly Pass to make things easier and safer for everyone. Instead of using paper passes, students can now request a pass on their Chromebook and staff can see who’s out of class in real time. The pass stays active until the student checks in at their destination, helping to cut down on wandering or long breaks. This system also keeps things more consistent across classrooms and helps track tardies automatically, making it quicker and more efficient for staff to support students and keep the school running smoothly.
Staff and students will receive training on the new system over the next two weeks. We hope to be fully operational by Monday, September 15, 2025.
EHS One Team Goosechase
The EHS One Team Goosechase is a fun and interactive way to get involved in the life of our school! This digital scavenger hunt encourages students to participate in a variety of sports and activities challenges, earning points along the way while exploring everything EHS has to offer. It’s a great opportunity to team up with friends, show your school spirit, and discover new ways to get connected. Whether you’re snapping photos, completing tasks, or checking out different events, the Goosechase is all about building community and having a blast while doing it. The student code to join is E1XE7I
NPSL Student Athlete Leadership Summit
On Friday, 32 athletes representing almost all of our EHS athletic teams, traveled to Auburn High School for an NPSL Student Athlete Leadership Summit. These athletes were able to meet with students from all 17 NPSL schools while they learned about positive competition and how to promote that concept within our teams and schools. There were two awesome guest speakers: Tony Davis, a former Seahawk and long-time football coach and AD, who talked about the privilege of leadership and leading with empathy; and Tyler Trimble, a basketball official who has worked in youth, high school and college athletics throughout his career, who shared a referee’s perspective of why positive competition improves sports for everyone involved, including officials who do their best in an often thankless job so kids have opportunities to compete. Throughout the event, the students also participated in small group discussions and activities to build relationships and to find ways to promote positive competition through their leadership. The summit concluded with all of the athletes signing the NPSL leadership pledge and taking a group photo. It was a great experience for all.
