Math: This past week, we worked on Lesson Zero. The focus was on routines and building stamina throughout the lesson. This week we will build off of Lesson Zero and begin our Unit 1: Three-Digit Numbers: Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction. Starting on Tuesday, 08/26, we will begin i-Ready Diagnostic testing. This will be conducted in 30 minute increments per day over the course of two weeks, although most students will not need the full two weeks.

Reading: This week we will continue our launch. We will continue to work on smooth transitions and getting ready quickly for our whole group instruction. Starting on Tuesday, 08/26, we will begin i-Ready Diagnostic testing. This will be conducted in 30 minute increments per day over the course of two weeks (most students will not need the full two weeks).

Writing: We will start SRSD (Self Regulated Strategy Development) pre-testing this week. The students will be listening to the teacher read a passage and will also watch a video about the story. Then all students will write in response to the prompt. The students will be guided in applying SRSD strategies with the text, such as using a GIST statement, and highlighting and pulling out text evidence.

Science/Social Studies:

Carey/Crawford - Science

Bruce/Christou - Social Studies

We will be staying with our own classes this week to start content.

In science, we will start with an overview of the scientific method and then begin our first unit, Life Science. In social studies, we will start our three-week unit on Civics and Government. We will begin by learning about respecting others and how to be a good citizen in our community.

Reading Logs:

Our Third Grade Goal is to read at least 100 minutes each week. How you and your student want to break up the 100 minutes each week is up to you. Reading logs will come home each Monday and are due the following Monday. Please be sure your student puts their name on their reading log. Please have them record the date, the title of their book they read, and their minutes each night on their log. One night a week please have your student write a response to what they are reading. There are ideas for ways to respond to their reading on the back of the reading log. Students should write a 3-5 sentence response. When your student completes their reading log, please total their minutes, sign, and return it to school on the following Monday.

Other topics to Mention:

  • Keeping snacks to one item and preferably a healthy item. There should be no juice boxes or drinks other than water at this time.

  • Please make sure toys and other little things are staying at home/in backpacks at school. These are just creating more distractions in the classroom.

  • I want to thank you again, parents, for helping your child set up their homework routine. Many students continue to be proud to share their parent signatures showing that they had completed their homework. We will now begin working on the routine at school of being sure we turn in the completed homework. Just a reminder the first reading log is due on Monday. This week, please help your student to find stickers and pictures of family, friends, pets, sports etc. that they feel represent them. We will be decorating the front of our writing notebooks next week to make it a collage of each student. Please be sure to send in pictures that you do not need back because they will be glued to the front of your students notebook. If possible, please send the stickers into school by this Friday, August 29th.
