Celebrating Black History! Celebrating Black History!

Black History Month is celebrated annually in February and is an opportunity to honor the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history. GLAAD has prepared a resource kit for teaching Black History Month in ways that are inclusive of LGBTQ+ people. They have also made social-media-ready informational graphics about Black LGBTQ+ icons!

Cabot Yerxa Elementary School

The CY Rainbow Club has some very resilient members! They made some beautiful posters to hang on campus to teach their classmates about the words behind the acronym LGBTQ+. Unfortunately, just a few days after the posters were hung up, a break-in occurred on campus (outside of school hours) and the posters were destroyed.

The CY Rainbow Club members are disappointed and upset, but they have rallied! In our most recent meeting they said they want to make new posters (and back-ups!), they want to write a letter to the kids who destroyed their posters to explain the meaning and importance of Rainbow Club, and they want to plan an informational event to teach their classmates how to be allies. Their advisors could not be more proud!

The MSJ GSA hosted a Unity movie night on January 31st! They showed Love, Simon and enjoyed drinks, pizza, and dessert. This event was made possible by the Palm Springs Gay Men's Chorus Grant.

Brave Spaces Parents is hosted by the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert. Meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Brave Spaces is a support group for adult family members and allies of transgender, non-binary and gender-expansive tweens and young teens. The mission of this group is to create a safe/brave peer community where adults can support each other and find helpful tools on the parenting journey. One-on-one parent support/education meetings are also available for parents seeking additional resources.
