Message from Principal Sheryll Orbase
Dear Rose City Park Families,
Our walking students are featured in a new Oregon Walks video highlighting the Walking School Bus Program, which helps create safer, healthier, and more connected communities by bringing students and families together on their walk to school. We are proud of our students and volunteers who make this program a success! Watch the video here: Oregon Walks Walking School Bus Video. If you are interested in volunteering as a Walking School Bus Leader in the Ellington community, please click this link.
In addition to celebrating our students, I would like to share two important community updates.
First, Commissioner Moyer has introduced an amendment to fully restore funding for the SUN program and prevent the closure of nine school sites. The proposed $1.2 million restoration would allow SUN to continue supporting students' academic success and connecting families with essential resources. To make this restoration possible, Commissioner Moyer is proposing efficiencies within the County’s internal services budget to prioritize funding for critical community programs like SUN.
Shannon Singleton, District 2 Multnomah County Commissioner, will be hosting a community conversation to hear directly from constituents about their priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. She would welcome the community’s participation in this conversation:
Budget Community Conversation
Date: Saturday, May 23
Time: 10:30am - 12:00pm
Location: Rose City Presbyterian Church, 1907 NE 45th Ave, Portland, 97213
The County is expected to make a final decision on the proposal on June 4, 2026. We will continue to share updates as they become available.
Second, we are excited to continue moving forward with Phase One of our schoolyard depaving and nature scaping project, which will remove 6,000 square feet of blacktop from the north end of the schoolyard. Our Community Depave Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026. As part of the project, RCP students will learn about stormwater management and watershed health and will have opportunities to help plant trees and native plants. We could not be more excited about this first grant-funded step toward realizing our Schoolyard Vision. Special thanks to the City of Portland’s Percent for Green Grants program, our project lead, the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, and our project partners, DePave and Juncus Studio.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our students and community.
Enjoy the three-day weekend!
