Superintendent's Update
October 31, 2025
Centennial School District | November 2025
Dear Centennial Colleagues, Students, Families and Community,
As we enter November, we do so at a time when many in our community are carrying a great deal, both within and beyond our schools and classrooms. Across our District, I continue to see the care, effort, and consistency it takes to create a supportive environment for students. That work continues each day thanks to the dedication of our staff, families, students, and community, even in the face of difficult circumstances.
This month also includes Veterans Day, a time to recognize those who have served our country. We are grateful for your service and the contributions you make to both our country and our local community.
As we move toward the holiday season, I know this time of year can bring a mix of emotions. For some, it’s a season of celebration or gathering. For others, it may be a time of reflection or pause. However you mark this time, I hope you’re able to find moments of connection and peace. I am especially grateful for the many ways our staff, families, and community partners invest in one another and support the wellbeing of our students.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to making Centennial a place where every student feels safe, valued, and connected.
National Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. This annual event provides the opportunity to learn about the history, achievements, contributions, and cultural legacy of the original inhabitants of the land that now makes up the United States.
Veterans Day - No School Tuesday, November 11
All schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, November 11 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
Thanksgiving Break - November 27 & 28
Schools may have additional "no school" days during the week of November 24-28 based on grade level. Please see this year's Academic Calendars (found here) or watch for communications from your child's school for more information.
Immigration Resources
Our focus as a District is on supporting students' well-being, learning, and sense of belonging. Every child deserves to come to school feeling safe, valued, and respected. We are committed to providing stability, compassion, and care for all who walk through our doors, regardless of background or circumstance.
If your family is experiencing distress or needs additional assistance, please reach out to your school office to be connected with resources and to ensure your child continues to feel supported at school. Additional community-based resources are also available; please see the link below to our Immigration Resources webpage for more information.
District & Community Food Resources
With the current federal government shutdown creating uncertainty about food benefit programs such as SNAP and WIC, we know that there are families within our District community who are concerned about consistent food access.
As a reminder, all Centennial students are able access free and nutritious breakfast and lunch meals at their school locations, with no application process necessary. For November menus and other school nutrition information, visit our website at www.csd28j.org/meals.
Additionally, there are a number of community-based food resources available for families to access as needed, including the Food for Families program at Centennial High School. This bi-monthly food pantry was created by CHS students, and does not require identification or address verification to participate. Food for Families will hold their next food distribution on November 12, 4-5pm, and families with safety concerns can call 971-220- 6679 to arrange an alternative way to receive food safely.
If you need more information about available community food resources, click the button below or visit www.csd28j.org/foodresources to view our updated food resources webpage. We will continue to update this webpage with new resources as more information becomes available.
"How can I help?"
Inclement Weather: Be Prepared!
The Centennial School District maintains a preparedness plan for the monitoring of inclement weather and potential weather-related impacts on school operations, including our facilities as well as road safety for transportation. As these impacts are evaluated, there may be changes to the school schedule such as a school closure, a delayed start to the school day, or an early dismissal. Snow routes for our school buses will also be used when road conditions are deemed unsafe by our Transportation Department staff.
When inclement weather causes changes such as these, we will notify our staff and families using multiple methods:
- ParentSquare messaging (text, email, and app notifications). For more information about using ParentSquare, visit our website here or contact your school office.
- Centennial School District website: www.csd28j.org
- Social Media (Facebook: CentennialSD28j / Instagram: centennial_schools)
- Flash Alert notifies local news stations. Individuals can subscribe to receive FlashAlert updates for Centennial School District here: http://www.flashalert.net/id/centennialsd.
Parents/caregivers, if your email address or phone number has changed in the last year please contact your school office to make sure we have your up-to-date contact information.
Immunization Information
- Make your appointment early — there will be no drop-in clinics this year.
- Vaccine deadline: February 25
- Call 2-1-1 for help finding vaccine locations.
For more information about required vaccines, visit MESD's Immunization webpage here, or our District's immunization webpage here.
Safe Routes to Schools: Ruby Bridges Day
During the week of November 14th, we're inviting the entire Centennial School District community to take a step forward by celebrating Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. This day honors the incredible bravery of Ruby Bridges, who at age six faced hatred and adversity to walk to school and help desegregate the school system in New Orleans. Her simple act of courage reminds us all that positive change often begins with one brave step. By celebrating this day, we can inspire our students to show kindness and stand up for what is right.
As part of this celebration, Patrick Lynch, Pleasant Valley, and Powell Butte Elementary will be holding Story Walks of the book “I am Ruby Bridges” on their campuses. A Story Walk is an innovative way to promote literacy and physical activity by displaying the pages of a children's book along an outdoor walking trail or path. Sequential pages are mounted on signs, inviting classes to stroll from post to post while reading the story together.
Additionally, the following schools will be hosting walk-to-school events in honor of this celebration:
Wednesday, November 12th: Butler Creek Elementary
Thursday, November 13th: Centennial Middle School and Meadows Elementary are co-hosting a walk to school event
Friday November 14th: Parklane Elementary and Oliver Middle School are co-hosting a walk to school event
To explore the options for your school's celebration, please reach out to our Safe Routes to School Coordinator, Ian Rees, at ian_rees@csd28j.org.
Don't Miss This Year's Eagle Expo!
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with CHS students to learn about their academic and extracurricular achievements, as well as future plans. Participant feedback helps our students to learn and grow as they take the next steps in their academic and professional journeys, so all community members are invited to attend.
For more information about the Eagle Expo, please contact Adriann Hardin at 503-762-7333. Thank you for your supporting our Centennial students!
Don't forget to "fall back" for Daylight Savings! Remember to set your clocks back by one hour on Sunday, November 2nd.
