MESSAGE FROM MS JOANNA MESSAGE FROM MS JOANNA

Dear PS 107 Families,

One of the things I am most proud of at PS 107 is the genuine diversity of our school community: the many cultures, backgrounds, identities, and life experiences that our children bring through our doors every day. That diversity is a gift, and it is something we work hard to celebrate and honor throughout the school year.

It is precisely because we care so deeply about this that I want to share something with you directly and honestly: in recent months, we have seen an increase in bias-related incidents across grade levels. These incidents have involved race, gender, gender expression, body image, and socioeconomic status, and they have occurred across classrooms and grades. They are not isolated to any one group of students or any one part of our building. In some of these incidents, students have shared that they were repeating language or ideas they encountered online. This is an important reminder of how much what children see and hear on their devices can shape the way they think and speak, and why it is so critical to monitor your child's personal device use closely and to keep the lines of communication open about what they are seeing online.

I want to be clear: bias-related incidents are not tolerated at PS 107. When they occur, we respond with accountability, education, and repair. Our job, as a school and as a community of families, is to make sure that when that happens, there are real consequences, real learning, and real effort to make things right.

How We Respond When an Incident Occurs

When a bias-related incident is reported at PS 107, we take it seriously and follow clear protocols outlined by the NYC Public Schools Office of Safety and Youth Development. We speak with all of the children involved and reach out to the families of everyone affected. Internally, these incidents are also discussed in broad terms, maintaining confidentiality throughout, at our Safety Committee meetings and with our student wellness team and our staff and parent Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) teams, so that we can put proactive educational measures in place and work to ensure these incidents do not repeat themselves.

How We Work Proactively

Responding to incidents is only part of the picture. We also work proactively, throughout the school year, to build a culture of belonging and respect. Here is some of what that looks like at PS 107:

  • Our One Book, One School Community project brings our entire school together around a shared text each month, often connected to the Heritage Month we are celebrating. These books are chosen to help children take the perspective of people who are different from them, as well as to recognize themselves in the characters they meet. We want every child to feel proud when they see their community represented, and to come to understand that difference is what makes our world so rich and worth celebrating.

  • Our Heritage Month celebrations honor the many cultures and communities that make up PS 107, Brooklyn, New York City, and our nation, and help students understand that many different groups of people have contributed to making our country what it is. Diversity is a strength, and these celebrations make that tangible for children.

  • Our PurposeFull People curriculum addresses these themes directly, particularly through the Kindness and Respect modules.

  • Our classroom libraries are carefully curated to include books representing a wide range of cultures, life circumstances, and experiences.

  • Our Meet the Writers partnership brings authors with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and characters into our school community.

  • Many of our in-school residencies expose students to a variety of cultural traditions and forms of artistic expression.

How Families Can Help

School can only do so much. These conversations need to happen at home, too. We share our monthly One Book, One School Community discussion guides with you so that you can revisit these books at home and talk about them with your children. We also encourage you to explore the following resources, recommended by our Respect for All Liaison and school counselor, Sarah Green:

Websites:

  • Raising Race Conscious Children is a wonderful resource with a wide range of strategies for talking with your child about race

  • NYC Public Schools' Together for Justice page offers a range of resources for families

  • A great curated list of picture books about diversity from Doing Good Together

Some recommended read-alouds to explore together:

  • A Kids Book About Racism by Jelani Memory

  • The Colors of Us by Karen Katz

  • All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold

  • Julian Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love

  • And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any of these resources, please do not hesitate to reach out to Sarah Green, PS 107’s Respect for All liaison at sgreen15@schools.nyc.gov.

It Takes All of Us

Building a community where every single child feels that they belong and that their identity is seen and respected is not the work of any one person or any one institution. It takes all of us. Thank you for being partners in this, for having these conversations with your children at home, and for trusting us to have them at school. We are in this together.

Warmly,

Ms. Joanna

FUNDRAISERS

ANNUAL FUND

Contribute to the Annual Fund, which directly supports essential school programs and resources. We are nearing the end of the year but have not yet reached our goal. Please help us get over the finish line with your donation! Here’s how:

  • Make a one-time or monthly donation online via Konstella by clicking here.

  • Share this public link with non-Konstella users (e.g. extended family and friends).

  • Make a gift of stock here.

  • Find out if your employer offers a matching gift program - if so, taking the extra step to secure a corporate match makes a huge difference!

Why support the Annual Fund?

PS 107 relies on PTA support to supplement DOE funding, which consistently falls short of what's needed. This partnership between families and the school makes possible important programs such as Art and Science, as well as supplies, curriculum materials, extra classroom support, and so much more. THANK YOU in advance for your contribution! Please contact PS 107 parent Betsy Goldfarb with any questions about the Annual Fund: betsy@ps107.org.
