PTO Provides Play Equipment for Recess
Greendale's PTO provided each classroom with play equipment for recess. Each class received various sports balls and outdoor games to use during recess. The students really have enjoyed having this equipment.
The Greenhouse is Open
GES now has a greenhouse up and ready to use. Thanks to Ms. Sprinkle obtaining funds through Donors Choose and grants, students will now have the opportunity to have hands-on experience learning about seeds, plants, and flowers.
Creative Arts Night
On Thursday, April 11, GES hosted its' annual Creative Arts Night. The art show featured art created by each student in the school. The talent showcase featured eight different acts demonstrating talents in music, gymnastics, and movement. In addition, original writing was featured throughout the building. It was a wonderful night showcasing the many creative talents of our GES students.
Mental Math Bee
The Mental Math Bee is a competition, much like a spelling bee, that consists of several rounds and a series of challenging questions. To move on to the next round, students need to use mental math strategies and have good number sense to correctly solve facts, equations, and more as quickly as possible. Students that did not advance to the next round participated by answering questions on their whiteboards, keeping their own scores, and cheering on their friends. The sportsmanship displayed in each grade level was heartwarming. Greendale's math teachers are impressed at the speed, flexibility, and accuracy of these awesome mathematicians. We expect to see some students excited to learn their math facts and compete again next year.
Community Service Project
As a community service project, Greendale students collected snack items for our friends across the street at Greendale Home. Students collects 35 boxes of crackers, three bags of popcorn, six boxes of granola bars, 39 boxes of snack cakes, and 60 bags of mints/hard candy.
SOL Kick-Off Assembly
To kick off the SOL testing season on a positive note, teachers held an assembly for students in the format of a gameshow, "Are You Smarter Than a Greendale Lion." Teachers who teach testing subjects, along with the site test coordinator and our principal sat in the contestants chairs and answered questions in math, science, language arts, and Virginia studies. Any contestant who missed a question had to spin the Wheel Of Consequences and suffer through the consequence on which it landed. Consequences included a pie in the face, getting soaked with a super soaker, having slime dumped on them, being sprayed with silly string, eating multiple Warheads (sour candy) at a time, and an obstacle course. Of course, hilarity ensued an the teachers missed questions and had to suffer the consequences. At the end of the program, our younger students cheered on our third, fourth, and fifth grade students with well-wishes as they left the gymnasium. It was a fun way to motivate the students before the tests.
