Newsletter Week 6 Term Three
26th August 2026
Principal's Message
NEWSLETTER WEEK 6 TERM 3 2026.
Last week, Sara, Sylvia, and I were fortunate to attend some awesome Professional Development in Sydney. We attended the Curriculum Conference, where excellent international and Australian speakers discussed Knowledge-Rich Curricula.
During our trip, we stayed at MacKillop Place, which features the MacKillop Museum. The museum showcases the life, history, and educational legacy of Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of Saint Joseph. We also visited the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel, a sacred space where Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop rests eternally in her tomb. It was a very special place to visit.
We would like to invite you to one of our Strengthening Partnerships meetings. The first meeting is being held today at 3:15 pm in our school hall, where we are seeking ideas on how our school can support our partnership with whฤnau and the community. The second meeting is on Wednesday, 2 September at 5:30 pm in the school hall. Please come along.
Our next School Parish Mass is coming up on Sunday, 13 September. We are looking forward to bringing our whole community together and hope to see lots of our students and families there! Please ensure students wear their full school uniform to this Mass.
Young Vinnies will be serving hot chocolate again this term on Wednesday mornings. Students can bring a can or a gold coin donation in exchange for a hot chocolate.
Young Vinnies are also raffling a youth-sized All Whites jersey signed by the team! Tickets are $3.00 each or two for $5.00. All proceeds will go to the church roof fund to secure a fish plaque for Vinnies Youth 2026. Tickets can be purchased at the school office or by sending money with your child to give to their teacher.
Last week, our gymnasts performed particularly well in the individual competition. We have a strong gymnastics club at the school that meets once a week to practice their moves. What impresses me most is that our older students coach our younger students during junior gymnastics. Thank you to their coach, Lori Norton, who has been working with our gymnasts over the year.
On Monday, several students participated in the Fluro Golf Day at the Rotorua Golf Club. Thank you to Shanelle and the parents who transported and accompanied children to the golf course. Our children had lots of fun!
Today, a large contingent of students ran in the Tough Guy and Gal event held at Lakes Ranch. It is always a popular event for our students.
Next week, we have chess teams competing in the Taupล and Rotorua Chess Competitions. Thanks to the parents who will be accompanying our teams to the competitions.
And on Monday night, our dance group will be competing in the Dance NZMade Competition at the Sir Howard Morrison Centre. Our girls have been practising for a long time to perfect their dance. Thanks to Adele Rennie for her coaching of the dancers. Many thanks also to Charlotte Schimanski and Ranolf Pharmacy, whose generous sponsorship enabled us to provide the costuming and props for the dancers. Iโm really looking forward to watching our dancers in action!
Have a great week,
David

Attendance Update - Supporting Regular School Attendance
The Ministry of Education expects students to attend school every day it is open, with a goal of missing fewer than 5 days per term (approximately 90% attendance or higher).
In line with Ministry requirements, schools are now required to send attendance emails to parents and caregivers when a student has been absent for 5 days (less chance of success), 10 days (hard to make progress), and 15 days or more (very hard to make progress) within the term. These emails will be automatically generated by our student management system.
Please be aware that ALL absences are included in these totals. This means that even when absences are due to illness or other justified reasons, they still contribute to the overall attendance record, and we are still required to send attendance emails when applicable.
We recognise that families do their very best to support their children's wellbeing, and we understand that illness and unavoidable circumstances do occur. We also sincerely appreciate families keeping their children at home when they are unwell, as this helps to protect the health of others in our school community.
If you have any questions regarding this new requirement for absences, please contact: Sylvia Dunkley, Deputy Principal (sylviad@stmarysrotorua.school.nz)

Director of Religious Studies
"Do not let your troubles disturb your trust in God." (St. Mary MacKillop, 1873). In his sermon this week, Fr. Prakash reminded us what it really means to hand our worries over to God. Real worry usually creeps in when we try to control things far beyond our reach, like the future, other people, or unexpected struggles. Trusting God's plan isn't about having all the answers; it's simply admitting, "I can't control this, but God can, so I'm going to step back and let Him take over." Father also shared a great challenge: doing something kind for someone else in complete secret. Iโm going to try it this week. Why not join me and spread a little quiet joy?
On Thursday 3rd September at 12:15 pm, K4 and T8 will be hosting the Nativity of Mary Liturgy. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Save the date! Our next School Parish Mass is coming up on Sunday, September 13th. We're looking forward to bringing our whole community together and hope to see lots of our students and families there!
Please keep in your thoughts and prayers all our children who are taking part in the Baptism programme over the next few weeks. May God guide them and their families.
I hope you have a wonderful week.
God bless.

Aarikethโs big achievement
Aariketh has become a finalist in the NZ National Great Talk Speech Competition and will be performing in the Grand Final on 13 September at the University of Auckland!
His speech topic is โIโm a Big Brotherโ โ a very special topic close to his heart.
Aariketh absolutely adores his little sister, Aarisa who is only 18 months old. He calls her โChuggyโ, and the two of them share the most magical bond.
When asked what he would like to give his speech about, without hesitation he said he wanted to talk about his little sister, Chuggy.
He has also been inspired by his big sister, Akeesa, who he has watched performing speeches and poems. Akeesa recently achieved 4th place nationally in the Great Talk Poetry Competition, and Aariketh wanted to perform just like his big sister.
And look where that inspiration has taken him โ all the way to the National Grand Final!
