STUDENT-ATHLETE MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS
🏅 Welcome to The Athlete’s Edge – November Edition!
As the fall season winds down and the energy shifts toward the holidays, it is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and refocus. This month’s newsletter highlights the importance of gratitude, stress management, and staying grounded during recruiting season because thriving as a student athlete means caring for both your mind and body.
You will also find team building ideas to remind you that sports should be challenging, but always fun and full of purpose.
Let’s finish this season strong with gratitude in our hearts, b. alance in our routines, and joy in the game.
Remember, your mindset is your greatest advantage. Progress over perfection, always!
🧠 MINDSET MATTERS: GRATITUDE IN THE GAME
Gratitude is a game changer in every sense of the word.
Athletes who regularly express gratitude experience lower stress, better focus, and stronger relationships with teammates and coaches. This month, take time to reflect on the good around you, including your health, opportunities, coaches, teammates, and the lessons learned on and off the field, court, track, pool, or mat.
Try this:
At the end of each practice or game, name one person and one moment you are grateful for.
Small moments of appreciation create big shifts in mindset.
🤝 TEAM BONDING SESSION: THE POWER OF FUN
Session Goal: Strengthen trust, unity, and joy within the team.
Activity 1: Gratitude Circle
Each player shares one positive thing about a teammate.
This builds confidence and mutual respect while reinforcing team connection and appreciation.
Activity 2: Sports Remix Challenge
Split into groups and create a fun, exaggerated reenactment of a memorable play or game moment.
This encourages laughter, creativity, and shared memories while focusing on the fun that brought everyone to the sport.
Reflection:
End the session by asking
-
What does playing for this team mean to you
-
What do you want others to say about our team’s spirit
Wrap up with a group photo, playlist, or post practice snack to celebrate unity

Your monthly guide to NCAA rules, eligibility, and college readiness for student-athletes
Building Your Path to the Next Level
As a new school year begins, it is the perfect time for student-athletes to start planning their path toward college athletics. Understanding NCAA eligibility early ensures that every class, grade, and decision moves you closer to your goals. Student-athletes in 8th grade and above can now create their own NCAA Eligibility Center account to begin tracking progress.
Parents, please take time to talk with your student about the importance of staying focused, maintaining academic balance, and setting long-term goals—because every season counts when preparing for the next level.
To help guide you, we are sharing:

What Student-Athletes Should Know Right Now
Create Your NCAA Account Early
Students should register at eligibilitycenter.org before high school or early in ninth grade to stay on track.
Division I and II athletes must create a Certification Account.
Division III athletes may use a Free Profile Page.
- Each high school has an official list of NCAA-approved core courses. Check your school’s list at NCAA Core Courses and ensure your schedule includes these classes.
Division I: Must complete 16 core courses, earn at least a 2.3 GPA, and meet the 10/7 rule (10 core courses, including 7 in English, math, or science, before senior year).
Division II: Must complete 16 core courses with at least a 2.2 GPA.
Division III: Eligibility is set by the individual college.
- Graduate with your class to ensure all courses count toward NCAA eligibility. Late coursework may not be accepted for Division I certification.
- NCAA certification looks at more than performance, it requires consistency, integrity, and preparation both in the classroom and in competition.
- Use this school year to plan together. Talk about potential college choices, explore the NCAA School Search Map, and keep documentation organized (transcripts, test scores, coach contacts, etc.).
🏅 CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH
The Gratitude Game
This month’s challenge is all about strengthening your mindset and appreciation for the game, the grind, and the people who support you.
Your Mission:
-
Keep a Gratitude Journal
Write down three things you are thankful for each day. These can be big wins or small moments, like a good practice, a supportive teammate, or a lesson learned after a tough game. -
Reflect After Every Practice or Game
Take a minute to write one sentence about what went well and what you are grateful for. This helps shift your focus from mistakes to progress. -
Gratitude in Action
Do one small act of kindness for someone who makes your athletic journey possible — a coach, parent, teammate, or trainer.
Your Goal:
By the end of the month, you will have 90 reasons to be thankful, a stronger mindset, and a better appreciation for the process.
Bonus Challenge:
At the end of November, read back through your journal and highlight your top five moments of gratitude. Notice how your energy and perspective have changed.
🎓 RECRUITING REALITY CHECK
It is recruiting season, and that can bring both excitement and anxiety.
Remember, your value is not defined by offers, rankings, or social media posts.
College coaches recruit character just as much as athletic ability.
Recruiting Tips for November:
-
Keep your grades strong. Academic consistency matters.
-
Update your highlight reel and email it to coaches personally.
-
Use your school counselor and coach for reference letters.
-
Follow up with a thank you note after visits or communication.
-
Most importantly, stay grounded. The right fit will find you when the time is right.
WELLNESS TIP OF THE MONTH
Gratitude: The Simple Path to Positivity
Start your day with a gratitude stretch. Before you check your phone or head to class, take a deep breath, stretch your body, and think of three things you are thankful for. It sets a positive tone and helps keep stress in check throughout your day.
Gratitude has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and increase mental resilience, all of which are beneficial to athletic performance.
Stay Strong, Stay Positive!
