The cherry blossom is the national flower of Japan. The opening of the cherry blossom signals the start of spring. The blooms last for about two weeks in March and April. Hanami, also known as the “cherry blossom festival,” is an annual spring celebration in Japan. In English, Hanami means “flower viewing.” In most large cities like Tokyo, hanami celebrations usually involve eating special foods and listening to music with family and friends under the cherry blossom trees.

Marlins, this week we’re asking: What does Hanami mean in English? Place one answer slip in a Cultural Corner box by the end of the school day this Thursday for your chance to win a prize. Your Student Council members will select 1 primary and 1 upper grade student from a raffle during Friday morning announcements.
