Decatur Community,
Education has its traditions. Last week was one of my favorites, the Parent-Teacher Conference. It's been quite awhile since I was in a classroom, but I remember that first conference of the year was always a time of excitement for me. I loved meeting with parents to discuss the kids that I had gotten to know. Often times I knew the parents, but there were many I had never met before. It was always kind of a game to try and guess which parent belonged to which student if I did not know them. Either way, it was always a great way for students, parents, and teachers to show that we are all on the same team. It was good turnout overall, and it was just what was needed as we march into November.
This week is Halloween, and with it comes a great tradition that is home to Oberlin, something I experienced for the first time myself last year. Of course, I am talking about Halloween Clean-up. This will be the 98th Halloween Clean-up, and it's a great way to give thanks back to a community that shows so much support to the school.
SHOUTOUTS
Shoutout to Cheyanna Hale for earning a 1 at State KMTA in Piano. This is a second straight year for Cheyanna, a senior, that represents a second consecutive year. Cheyanna is the definition of an involved student. Along with Piano, Cheyanna is involved in the musical, DCHS Singers, the band, Scholars Bowl, Cheer, and Forensics. Congratulations, Cheyanna!
Shoutout to the Booster Club for everything that they do for our students and staff. The Booster Club provided food for our conferences, and they will be back at it this Friday feeding our students at Halloween Cleanup. It is greatly appreciated, and we are very grateful for everything they do.
Shoutout to our head chef, Vicki Versailles and her fellow kitchen staff Tabetha Carfield and Renee Harman. Vicki provided a meal for the staff last Wednesday night. On top of that she and her crew made sure to set everything up and make sure that it was all ready to go each night. The crew also quickly rearranged tables from the typical lunch setting to the setting needed for conferences. We are very fortunate to have such a consistent and hardworking kitchen staff.
Shoutout to the first snow of the school year. In a few months, I will be sick of snow, winter, and cold weather in general, but the kind of snow that lightly covers the ground, steadily falls, and brings low risk, is always fun and exciting the first time of the year. This shoutout goes to science teacher Mr. Azada and his family and hoping they enjoyed their first time ever seeing snow. Bonus shoutout to Mr. Azada who became a licensed driver last Friday!
Shoutout to Mr. Gehring and the Driver's Ed. students. The first half of the semester has been spent studying up and learning all of the rules and regulations of the road. Last week, they finally got behind the wheel. Now is the time that it starts to get fun.
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Halloween Clean Up
The 98th annual Halloween Clean-Up is Friday, Nov. 3. The teachers chose Shakira Cook, Ana Freeman, Cheyanna Hale, Kamryn Oien, and Lukas Zodrow to lead the student-led service project. From those five, the student body chose Ana Freeman as the general.
If you would like your yard raked, please call the high school at 785 475-2231 and leave your name and number.
Championship Seasons Leave Special Memories: Football
I sent out a form asking about memories on the season. Not everyone responded, but here are quotes from our teams:
FOOTBALL
How we where undefeated.
-Grant Anderson
My favorite part was playing with all my friends and going undefeated again. What I’ll remember is going 14-0 in my junior high career.
-Brady Gehring
My most memorable moment is the whole season. I've coached these guys since they were playing flag football, so to be able to watch them have so much success, knowing all the work they put in as little kids was pretty awesome. The 8th grade class going 14-0 in their careers is something that I will carry with me for a lifetime, and I want to thank them for that!
-Coach Brandon Gehring
I'm happy the 8th graders never lost a game in junior high. My favorite part was my catch against Trego. I'll remember having 8 touchdowns on the year.
-Christopher Harris Hays
The people I was with and what they did.
-Brennen Louderback
"Don't think just do" -Coach Williams
-Kent Ploussard
From someone who was not a real big fan of football, it was really enjoyable. and it was a big learning point. My coaches have done an amazing job. I thank coach Gehring and my dad for pretty well teaching me everything I know about football. They have both been there for me throughout my whole school career etc.
-Mitchell Wasson
What I will most remember is how we grew as a team during the season.
-Coach Trevor Williams
Championship Seasons Leave Special Memories: Volleyball
I sent out a form asking about memories on the season. Not everyone responded, but here are quotes from our teams:
VOLLEYBALL
Overall, I am very excited with how the season ended! All our girls, A-C showed so much improvement over the entire season and played each game with so much heart and determination! Our A and B girls really let this shine during our league tournament and it was a perfect way to end our season! It was a honor to get to coach all these amazing young ladies this season, and I am excited for their future as lady Red Devils!
-Coach Brooke Breth
It was a very fun season and super fun to win league!
-Jori Fortin
It was a fun season .........I'm so glad i went out for volleyball.
-Brooklyn Gehring
My favorite moment is when we worked together as a team to get to every ball, kept our energy high, and kept our heads up when we got a drop ball. We always shook it off so that we could earn that point back the next time.
-Kaylee Kier
Winning the championships two years in a row for me, and A team winning the first championships in a long time.
Makalya Marshall
My favorite part about volleyball season was winning the NWKL with a great group of girls and how we worked together as a family to win.
-Lauren May
This season was my last season of junior high volleyball. I was going into the season happy, excited, and having high hopes about the coming season. 3 games in ,undefeated, we play Rexford and we lost. We were all upset, but we went to the locker room and said, Last loss, no more," and that was it. We didn't lose another game. We went into league hoping we would win, and we knew Greeley would be our hardest match, and it was! But we won. We were fired up the whole thing. I've never played on a team wanting to win and wanting to play like that before. It was an amazing last season of junior high volleyball.
