Academics
Literacy
Students have enjoyed learning about grasslands, rain forests, and coral reefs! We also read the story Filiberto in the Valley. Students will also take their Unit 1 assessment and complete our end-of-unit project. We will then wrap up Unit 1 and begin Unit 2: Characters Facing Challenges!
This week our Phonics focus was Long a spelling patterns. (a, ai, ea, ay, a_e). We searched for these patterns in our reading and practiced reading words that also fit these patterns. Next week we will focus on long o (oa, ow, o_e, and _oe).
Writing
This week, students planned and wrote a rough draft of their grasslands writing using their first PoWER cycle of the year. Next week, we will revise and complete our final grasslands writing.
Math
This week, we wrapped up our lessons on graphing. Students practiced reading and interpreting bar graphs and picture graphs to find information, compare data, and answer questions. They also worked on using the information in a graph to explain their thinking and solve problems. Students did a great job applying these skills as they worked with different types of graphs!
Next week, we will begin working on two-step word problems. Students will practice solving problems that require them to use two different steps and decide which operations and strategies will help them find the answer. This will be our final lesson in Unit 1, and we will use what we have learned throughout the unit to prepare for our assessment and wrap up our first math unit!
