Staff Shoutouts

Can not thank everyone for all that they do but I want to take time for a few shoutouts!

  • Stacy Stewart - What a great honor it was to have I Love Public Schools of Nebraska shine the spot light on one of our own for this month! It was a great honor and privilege to be a part of it and we thank Stacy for all the items she not only does for our students but also our staff! https://www.facebook.com/NElovesPS

  • Carrie Hansen - Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our music program! It has been great to see the pictures of our JH & HS students being able to play in honor bands and choirs!

  • Zach Kubik, Darrol Gray, Aundrea Morner & Taylor Kemper - Our HS track coaches are on the field, track or possibly the gym (pending the weather) each day with our student athletes! They push our kids to be their best and we are thankful for having their leadership for our kids!

When "The Dude" speaks, you listen

"I think the gift of time is possibly the most precious commodity we can offer. I have taught many families through the years and teaching from the oldest to the youngest siblings in a family unit holds a high honor.

I have had those instances of teaching the children of the parents I have instructed over the years. That is how a great relationship is built.

If a student has a problem, just being there to listen, offer advice, or add a few dollars towards necessities to help them achieve greatness in a safer environment. Most never forget an act of kindness that was extended towards them." #ilovepublicschools #feelthelovefriday

Being There

"As a superintendent, I pride myself on being in the hallways, getting in classrooms when I can, and also attending as many events that our students are a part of.

Sometimes you can see students who have a look like something isn't right. I appreciate that they will come to me when I call them over to ask them what is going on or how can I help.

It may be something that is out of my control but I believe they appreciate that someone is willing to ask what is going on or offer help. This shows them that it is okay to talk about what is on their mind and to also reach out to others who may be feeling down and out." #ilovepublicschools #feelthelovefriday

Making memories

"Some of the memories that make me the proudest to be in the field of education come from behind the scenes of the regular school day. It's the teamwork and the dedication from teachers before school, after school, or during the summer. It's the laughs in the back-to-school aisles when we run into each other because we just can't help but buy extra crayons, scissors, folders, and notebooks for students who may not have them.

It's the camaraderie from teachers and staff getting together to make tutus after school ensuring students have an awesome and unforgettable 2.22.22. Going above and beyond is something that just comes naturally for so many educators and here at Shelby-Rising City we are lucky to have the best!" #ilovepublicschools #feelthelovefriday

What is your Why?

"My greatest moments include seeing my former students as adults and hearing about their lives. My favorite was when a student told me that "math is no fun, but you somehow make it bearable!"

The number of relationships I have built over the years with students make each day worthwhile in the classroom. I love math and I get so excited when my students get the light bulb to click!" #ilovepublicschools #feelthelovefriday

Why I love teaching!

"I had a 1st-grade student who would refuse to work and would get mad. The classroom teacher would try to talk to him but he would only get more upset. He would often come to my room to calm down and get some work done.

One day he saw I had a blanket and put it over the table. He said it was too bright in my room and proceeded to go under the table. Then, after a few minutes, he asked for his work. I asked him how he was going to see his paper and he wasn't sure. I asked if a flashlight would work and he said yes and completed his work.

When he went back to class, we shared this with the classroom teacher. She then covered one of her tables for him to do his homework when the lights were too bright. While this worked most of the time, there was one day that was really bad.

He came into my room to work and all of a sudden started tossing chairs, desks, and everything off my shelves. I took the other students to my office and shut the door and asked a para and another teacher to stay as support. I had to calm him so we sat on the floor. While we were on the floor and he started to calm down, I asked him what was wrong. He said he was hot.

So, I asked the other teacher to grab a fan and we set it so that it was blowing on him. As we continued sitting there, he told me that when his temperature changes he gets mad and can't control it. So, we came up with a plan when this starts to happen that he could use the fan in the classroom or my room to cool down. He started doing better in school and made me realize that knowing your students well helps you to be a better teacher." #ilovepublicschools #feelthelovefriday

What stands out to you?

"During our book fair this year, two school employees had donated money so students who could not afford books could buy them. This is in addition to our Husky Heart program, which was funded by our change war. The two employees put their faith in me to identify those kids and put the money to good use.

One day, we had a student who was browsing, and they had that look in their eye. I didn't know about that student's situation at the time. Because of the donations of two employees, I was able to tell that student they could pick out some books from the fair. That student was so touched that they cried, and even wrote a thank you note to the donors. We were able to help many students through their donations. However, this one was particularly touching." #ilovepublicschools #feelthelovefriday

Message from Mr. Tejkl

"LOVE & MEMORIES..."

Good morning!

I hope that your morning is off to a great start and that your weekend has been a success! How many of you were jumping for joy when you saw rain Friday evening?!?! We will take what we can get and will be grateful for more when more comes. We are moving into another new month and the opportunity to continue to grow personally and professionally is still there! Continue to push forward and be the best version of yourself that you can be each day.

Along those lines though, don't get too caught up in just the materialistic items or getting caught up in your own head about items out of your control. It is important to remember to stay in the present and to be there with those around you! Being there means to be engaged, involved and being present with who you are around.

I can be a hypocrite on this one as my phone seems to be in my hand most of the time when I am home with Kylie and the boys. Emails, texts, preparing for the next day, twitter updates, etc...I'm continuing to improve (with reminders from a certain person) but it is important to enjoy the moments I have with my family and the time that is given. Whether we are in school, at events or just at home; take advantage of being around those you care about.

Life is unpredictable. Take advantage of the moment and make those memories with all around you. Life takes us in different directions sometimes so be thankful for the memories you are able to make with those you love, appreciate and care for!

Have a great rest of your Sunday!

Quote of the week to reflect on:

"At the end of the day all that matters is love and memories so make sure you give it and make sure you make them.

Trent Shelton

Sincerely,

Tucker Tejkl
