Dear Canyon Ridge Middle School students and parents,
I’m writing to let you know that our school has experienced the unexpected death of a former faculty member, Mr. Scott Harman. Mr. Harman taught 7th grade Social Studies at CRMS since the school opened in 2004 until he began teaching at Stiles Middle School this year, 2023-24. His passing has affected students and staff members deeply. Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott’s family and friends.
On Monday, we will have extra counselors on campus who are available for both students and staff. We hope this resource can help process a deep sense of loss and grief.
We expect everyone will react in different ways to the death of one of our school community members. We understand there will be a variety of emotions and responses to Mr. Harman’s passing.
The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and encourage an open expression of feelings. We encourage you to do the same and offer these helpful tips for parents provided by the National Association of School Psychologists. To assist your child,
Provide opportunities to express thoughts and feelings about death.
Answer questions using concrete descriptions and be prepared for repeated questions. Older students may ask more detailed questions to try to understand what happened.
Some children may feel less comfortable showing feelings and seeing expressions of grief in others. Make sure to provide these students with a variety of ways to express grief.
Watch for changes in your child’s behavior.
If your child has questions or needs help please have them see a counselor in the coming week. We will try to maintain as normal a routine and structure as the situation allows, and we encourage you to do the same with your family.
