Thompson Friday Forecast
October 24, 2025
From the Principal... Matt Clark
Good afternoon Thompson parents and guardians.
Today, our students had the valuable opportunity to hear from Judge Sandra Parga and Mayor Clint Hull during a presentation titled “The Worries of the World Wide Web.” Their message focused on helping students understand both the power and the pitfalls of technology and social media. They spoke candidly about online safety, digital footprints, and the long-term consequences of choices made on social platforms. It was an engaging and eye-opening session that encouraged students to think more critically about their online presence.
As parents, we all share the responsibility of guiding our children through the fast-changing digital landscape. While today’s presentation included some cautionary stories, our goal is that it also opens the door to meaningful conversations at home about healthy, responsible online habits. We’re grateful to Judge Parga and Mayor Hull for their partnership in supporting our community’s efforts to keep students informed, safe, and thoughtful as they navigate the days and years ahead.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Roll Thunder!

Saturday Detention
Thompson will hold its first Saturday Detention on November 8, 2025, from 8:00–10:00 AM. These detentions will be assigned by our Student Support Coordinators (Deans) for a variety of reasons, most commonly when students miss an assigned after-school or lunch detention. While the goal is accountability, Saturday detentions also provide students with an opportunity to reflect, reset, and take ownership of their choices. Our ultimate goal is to help every student grow in being respectful, responsible, and kind—both in their actions and in how they contribute to our school community.

📘 From the TMS Reading Specialists
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
What do Jamie Oliver, Jennifer Aniston, Richard Branson, and Tim Tebow all have in common? They’ve each spoken out publicly about their experiences with dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a common learning difference that affects reading, spelling, and writing—but it does not reflect intelligence. Many students with dyslexia have incredible strengths in creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Myth-buster: Dyslexia is not a vision problem, and struggling readers are NOT lazy or less smart.
Public schools can screen students for reading difficulties and provide support, but they cannot give a formal medical diagnosis of dyslexia. Support at school may include targeted reading instruction, accommodations like extra time and/or audio support, small-group interventions, and collaboration with families.

Why Math Practice Matters...
Math is more than memorizing formulas or solving for x. Regular, structured math practice helps students develop number sense, problem-solving skills, and confidence in their reasoning. Through consistent opportunities to explore patterns, make connections, and explain their thinking, students begin to see math as a meaningful and logical process rather than a set of isolated steps. Practice also strengthens fluency, accuracy, and perseverance when approaching new challenges. This is why we practice:
Builds Problem-Solving Skills
Students learn to approach complex problems, break them down, and reason logically with skills vital in everyday life and nearly every career.Develops Persistence
Math challenges students to stick with difficult problems, try new strategies, and learn from mistakes. This is essential for lifelong learning.Strengthens Brain Function
Studies show that consistent math practice improves memory, attention, and critical thinking.Supports Other Subjects
Math enhances performance in science, economics, technology, and even reading comprehension by improving analytical thinking.
6-Strategy: Cut 6 in half. Multiply the number by 3, Double It!
Example: 6 × 7 = ?
First, 3 × 7 = 21 Then double it: 21 + 21 = 42 or 21 x 2 = 42
6 x 7 = 42
***Shout-out to our students who ran out of time during group work and were still asking for more problems to solve! That’s why you are great mathematicians!
See the grade level below to find out what we are studying in math class!

🔨 Builders Club
Volunteer Opportunity
Thompson's Builders Club needs help supporting the Northern Illinois Food Bank. On Thursday, October 30th from 5:30 PM-7:30 PM, we are scheduled to serve at the food bank, and we need people to volunteer. Students who attend need to attend with a parent/guardian/older sibling. Those who volunteer will need to arrive at the food bank by 5:15 PM. This opportunity is an excellent way to serve the community, to spend time with family/friends, and earn service hours. An entire family, along with friends, may attend with a Thompson student who would like to volunteer. Children need to be eight years of age to volunteer. If you want to attend this rewarding service opportunity, please email David Simone at david.simone@d303.org with the first and last name of each individual who will be attending by Tuesday, October 14th.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Help Us Collect ONE MILLION Pop Tabs!
We’re on a mission to collect one million pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities, and we can’t do it without YOU (and your grandparents, cousins, neighbors, and carpool crew)!
Those tiny aluminum tabs from soda cans, soup lids, or sparkling water may seem small—but when we collect them together, they add up to real support for families with seriously ill children.
Here’s how to pitch in:
Save your pop tabs at home—and ask your grandparents, cousins, friends, and neighbors to do the same!
Bring them to school all year long.
Every tab brings us closer to our 1,000,000-tab goal!
Let's pull together and make a difference!

Wasco Baseball is excited to share that starting in Spring 2026, we will officially offer Recreational Softball leagues alongside our long-standing baseball program. Our focus is on providing a fun, local experience for girls beginning at age 4 (Tee Ball) and growing through grade-based leagues into middle school, depending on enrollment.
If a recreational softball league interests your family, please complete the survey below. This survey is simply to help us gauge interest and plan age groups. Your response will help our Board of Directors, along with newly added softball-specific board members, design the best possible program for the community.
We can’t wait to build this new chapter of Wasco Athletics with you. Thank you for your continued support as our Board of Directors works to grow and strengthen both Wasco Baseball and Wasco Softball.
