Heatherwood Middle School | May Newsletter
Dear Heatherwood Families,
As we move into May, we are excited to enter a time of celebration, growth, and reflection on all the learning that has taken place this year. Our students have worked hard, and we are proud of their progress.
Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA)
Our SBA testing window is underway, and we want every student to feel confident and prepared to do their best. Please help support your child by ensuring they:
- Get a good night’s rest
- Eat a healthy breakfast or bring a morning snack
- Bring a fully charged Chromebook each day
- Have wired earbuds available
This is an important opportunity for students to showcase what they’ve learned. We encourage them to stay focused, take their time, and put forth their best effort.
Dress Code Reminder
As the weather gets warmer, we’d like to remind families of our school dress expectations:
- Tops must have straps (strapless tops are not permitted)
- Shorts and skirts should be appropriate in length
We appreciate your support in helping students come to school dressed appropriately for a positive learning environment.
Campus Expectations
A quick reminder that water guns are not allowed on campus. Please reinforce this expectation with your student to help us maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
Finishing the Year Strong
As we approach the final stretch of the school year, we are encouraging all students to stay focused and continue demonstrating self-respect and respect for others. Strong attendance, active academic engagement, and showing “Hawk Pride” each day make a meaningful difference.
We have so much to celebrate as a school community. When our students finish the year on a positive note, it truly reflects the collective success of all—students, staff, and families alike.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Warm regards,
Dr. Laura Wellington, Principal and Mr. Chris Doll, Assistant Principal

A Word From Our Counselors
With May here and June not far behind, our Heatherwood Hawks have had a lot going on. Between the usual classroom ups and downs, the social dynamics that come with this time of year, and getting ready for SBA testing, there’s been plenty to manage. Students continue showing up, doing what they can, having good days, harder days, and everything in between. With just two months left, things can feel exciting, a little chaotic, and sometimes a bit overwhelming. That’s totally normal. Here are a few simple ways students can keep their momentum going as we head toward June:
Stay Organized: A little planning goes a long way. Keeping track of assignments, due dates, and test prep can help everything feel more manageable. And when something feels too big, breaking it into smaller steps can make it way less intimidating.
Manage Stress: Sunshine is finally peeking through, and getting outside—even for a few minutes—can make a huge difference. Fresh air, movement, good sleep, and fueling up with real food all help keep stress in check and energy up.
Seek Support: No one has to do this alone. Whether it’s talking with family, checking in with school staff, or leaning on friends, reaching out can make tough days feel lighter and good days feel even better.
Thank you for your continued partnership!
Warmest wishes,
