Our Partnership Matters

Dear Maverick Families,

At Memorial, we believe that character is just as important as academics. We want our Mavericks to be successful in the classroom, but we also want them to leave our school knowing how to treat others with kindness, respect, empathy, and compassion. That is why our PRIDE expectations are such an important part of who we are.

As educators, we have the privilege and responsibility of teaching children not only what to learn, but also how to live and work alongside others. And we cannot do that work alone. Our partnership with you matters.

Recently, we have seen an increase in incidents such as making unkind choices, and disrupting the learning environment. We have noticed that many of these incidents are occurring during transitions and less-structured times such as recess, arrival, and dismissal.

I want to be very clear: Bullying, intimidation, physical aggression, and mistreating another student are not acceptable at Memorial. Every child deserves to come to school feeling safe, valued, respected, and ready to learn.

This is where our partnership becomes especially important.

Please take a few minutes to talk with your Maverick about what it means to live our PRIDE—not just when an adult is watching, but in every moment and every setting. Talk about keeping hands and feet to ourselves, using kind words, solving disagreements appropriately, including others, and seeking adult help when a problem cannot be solved independently.

The moments that happen outside the classroom are opportunities for character to shine. How we treat someone on the playground, in the hallway, in the cafeteria, or in the carpool line matters just as much as how we behave in the classroom.

We will continue to teach, model, reinforce, and hold our students accountable to these expectations. When mistakes happen, we will use them as opportunities to help our Mavericks learn, grow, repair relationships, and make better choices.

But we need your help.

When our students hear the same message at home and at school—that kindness matters, respect matters, and how we treat others matters—we create a stronger and safer school community together.

Thank you for partnering with us and for having those important conversations at home. Our Mavericks are watching what we model, listening to what we say, and learning from what we expect.

Let's continue to be united in our mission to raise not only successful students, but kind, compassionate, responsible young people who make a positive difference wherever they go.

This is our Maverick Mission. And it is one we must accomplish together.

School Times School Times

Parents, please note school begins at 7:40. We are doing our very best to have the car line complete as quickly and SAFELY as possible. If you are not in the carline when the gate closes, you are considered late. You will need to walk your child to the office and sign them in late. Parents please do not let students out of the car without walking them inside. Tardies also add up! Missed instructional time can lead to a Principals Plan to make up lost time. Signing your child in or out late should not be a regular practice. We appreciate your help with this matter.

Read Across Memorial Preparation

Read Across Memorial is finally on its way! In the words of one illustrious parent, it's her favorite holiday of the year! If you don't know what Read Across Memorial Day is, it's a day were we come together as a community to celebrate the joys of reading and books. We invite district staff members and family members to come to school on October 30th to read books to our students in their classrooms. Any family member or family friend can come and read as long as they our Voly approved. See below for more details. This is also the day students may come dressed as their favorite book character.

Who: Memorial Elementary Parents and Family Members and Friends who are Voly Approved

What: Read a great book to your child’s class and other classes

When: Friday, October 30th

Why: Help share your love of reading with the students of Memorial

What you need to know:

  • If you are Voly approved or will register with Voly soon and would like to come read to one or more classes on October 30th, we would love for you to come celebrate literacy and stories with us!
  • You may sign up by filling out the Google form at https://bit.ly/3ytIfQJ or click the button below.
  • A schedule will be created and calendar invites will be sent out, along with more detailed info after a couple of weeks when everyone has had a chance to sign up.
  • Due to recent state laws, we can only allow you to read books that will be provided at Memorial. But they will be hand picked by our wonderful (alright, he’s okay at least) librarian.

Encourage your students to create their own poison plant

  • This activity is inspired by Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden by Christy Mandin.
  • Like last year, this activity will take the place of the Storybook Pumpkin patch.
  • Make your own ‘wonderfully weird’ flower or plant at home to add to the Memorial Library Poison Garden! Be creative! No real flowers or plants! Use craft materials or anything that won’t rot.
  • Students can make them on their own or with a family member's help.
  • Discuss these questions with a family member while creating your own poison garden flower or plant.
    • Sometimes, we meet people who are different from us. Just like Millie Fleur’s garden. their differences might seem unusual at first, but that’s what makes them special! How can you show kindness to someone who has a different interest, looks different, or acts differently than you?
    • What is something that makes you different from others? How does this difference make you special?
  • Students may bring their flower or plant to Mr. Dickerson in the Memorial Library any time during the month of October! Earn 20 Mav dollars for a good job!
  • The student's name and teacher should be somewhere on the plant.
  • Have fun!

Hello Hebron Feeder Families,

Hebron Football started the tradition a couple years ago where the 5th grade Hebron Elementary Feeder schools have the opportunity to run on the field with the varsity football team. Your student will get in free to the game if they are wearing a Memorial shirt!

Below are the dates for each Feeder pattern spirit nights.

  • Arbor Creek Feeders 10/9

  • Killian Feeders 10/23

Please meet me Friday 10/9 starting at 6:30pm outside the gate entrance to the track (inside of the stadium gates and next to where the football banners are hung on the fence before you get to the bleacher area). You must have on a Memorial shirt (or 5th grade shirt) for entry and to run on the field.
