Whitehouse News - March 2025

Greetings!
March 2025: A Message from Dr. DeRosa...
Dear WHS Families,
We certainly had a lot of fun welcoming in the new month! On March 3, we celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's birthday by merging it with our annual WHS Favorite Book Day. We also expanded on the celebration during our Town Hall Meeting where second grade teachers facilitated an assembly that centered on books and inspiring a love for reading in students. Later in the day, our younger students had another chance to partner with their older buddy classes for some Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) time together. Then, we rounded out the afternoon with what we call, Synthesis Day. The ultimate goal of this activity is to provide our older students with opportunities to synthesize information across multiple, similar texts. In this case, they are working on creating intricate Venn diagrams to compare and contrast multiple versions of Alice in Wonderland. You can read more about it below!

🐇Alice in Wonderland: Synthesis Day
Whitehouse School embarked on our second annual Synthesis Day. Partner classes met up to share their experiences regarding the literature from this year’s thematic unit. Second and third grade students read the original novel entitled, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, while younger students read a few picture book adaptations. When students came together, the younger children had the opportunity to share their insights about their versions of the story. Afterward, the youngsters gifted their books to the upperclassmen. Now, the second and third graders are synthesizing what they learned by comparing and contrasting the different texts. As mentioned above, they are using Venn diagrams as graphic organizers. These higher-order thinking skills align with our school’s NJSLA literacy goals, and sharing great stories is part of our community’s enduring culture. We are always thrilled to find meaningful ways to link learning and build partnerships within the walls of our school.

🤖3D Printers in the STEM Lab
A very special thank you goes out to the H.S.A. for purchasing five Toybox 3D printers and printer food (filament) to be utilized in our new STEM Lab. Students have been learning about the mechanics and safety of the printers. 3D printing offers a way for students to truly connect to the subject matter by physically manipulating "ready-printed" items. Our engineers in the Stem Lab celebrated our thematic unit "Alice in Wonderland" by each making a 3D printed heart symbolizing the Queen of Hearts.

Trustworthiness Month 💜
We are teaching the children to be trustworthy during the month of March. Trustworthiness is the quality of being honest, reliable, and dependable. We are teaching children to say what they mean and mean what they say by following through with their promises. Please partner with us and encourage your children to continue to show good character as they earn your permission to shade in pieces of their bucket-filler Trustworthiness puzzle!
Quick Quiz: Do you know our district's Strategic Plan Goals?
- Inquisitive Learning - Create and establish an inquiry-based framework that values an interest-driven learning environment. Learners will, individually and collaboratively, focus on identifying, analyzing, and solving problems as inquisitive members of their community.
- Partnerships - Establish partnerships that foster meaningful educational opportunities on local, regional, and global scales. Prepare all learners to become engaged and productive citizens through service to others, collaboration, and real-world connections.
- Social Awareness - Our learners will feel connected, valued, and secure in digital and non-digital learning environments cultivated by a shared sense of community. Every individual will develop skills that promote an awareness of self and others as well as the environment, including the ability to understand the impact of their decisions.
