Campus Administrator ~ Kari Kusek

Dear Wildcat Community,

It is already February and the second semester is flying by! We have been registering all grade levels over the last few weeks and are excited to see students making their choices for next year's classes. Eighth graders have completed selecting classes for 9th grade, and the math acceleration and APUSH assessments are complete! 6th and 7th grade elective choices were due today at 4pm, however if you need to still complete those, please email your choices to Emily Carter (ecarter3@cherrycreekschools.org) for 6th grade and Ali Holstein (aholstein@cherrycreekschools.org) for 7th grade.

We also have new after-school offerings that we are so excited to start. We have a girls fitness club, boys volleyball, and boys and girls flag football all happening this semester. Be on the lookout for more information! We also have a new Wrestling season starting and are excited to see our athletes grow again this year.

Finally, our Spring Panorama Survey is happening next week, and we look forward to seeing how students feel about their experiences at West. If you have any questions about Panorama, you can reach out to Mark Wackwitz (mwackwitz@cherrycreekschools.org).

Thank you so much for all your support and let's have a great Spring!

WMS SECURITY UPDATE WMS SECURITY UPDATE

WMS Updated Student Pick-Up Procedures

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The safety and security of our students remains a top priority at West Middle School. To further support this commitment, we have updated our student pick-up procedures.

Effective Monday, February 9, a PowerSchool approved contact must arrive on campus and have their identity verified by our security department before a student will be called from class for early dismissal or pick-up. Once verification is complete, the student will be called to the security desk for dismissal.

We appreciate your understanding, patience, and cooperation as we implement this change in the best interest of student safety. Thank you for your continued partnership and support of West Middle School.

If you have any questions regarding this procedure, please contact the Main Office at 720-554-5101.

COUNSELING COUNSELING

Hello WMS Families!

Hold on tight – our inaugural Pathway Day will be happening at WMS next week on Feb. 10th during student lunches. Industry professionals and leaders from the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus (CCIC) will be at lunches providing information and demonstrations in leading fields such as Aerospace, Behavioral Health and Cinematic Arts so that students can explore these pathways in preparation for High School. CCSD High School students are able to take classes and earn an industry certificate while creating opportunities for their future! Did you know that over 80% of our CCIC students go on to enter college with industry skills and career preparedness compared to their peers?

CAMPUS ADMIN CAMPUS ADMIN

West Parents and Guardians,

We have seen an increase in harassing and discriminatory language over the last month. As a reminder, Cherry Creek School District and West Middle School do not tolerate language or actions that discriminate on the basis of disability, race, ancestry, creed, color, sex/gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, or national origin or any language or action that creates an unsafe environment for students and staff - physically or emotionally. We will address any concerns according to district policy. Please speak with your students about their own language and ensure that they are clear on what is harassing or discriminating language as well as encouraging them to report inappropriate language they are hearing. We will be working with our teachers to support students with this information as well.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your support with this important matter.

Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference. 💙 We’ve identified a few students in need of backpacks and are hosting a backpack drive to help fill that gap. We are hoping to collect at least 25 new or gently used backpacks as soon as possible. 🎒

Backpacks can be dropped off at the front security desk or ordered and delivered directly to the school—please address deliveries to Principal Burkett’s assistant, Caroline Wheeler. Thank you for your generosity and for helping strengthen our Wildcat community. 🐾

Looking for another way to support our middle school? The PTCO is seeking volunteers for next year! Whether you can help with a single event or want to be more involved, there’s a place for you—no experience needed. Interested? Email Stephanie at volunteer@westptco.com to learn more.

ONE WEEK FOR NEW GEAR

The wait is over, Wildcats! 🎉 Our brand-new WestWear gear site is launching soon with fresh styles, bold designs, and all the school spirit you can handle. Rep West your way and gear up in styles you’ll actually want to wear.

RIDING THE BUS RIDING THE BUS

Transportation is required by CDE Regulations to account for all students on the bus and unauthorized passengers are not permitted. However, the Transportation Department recognizes that circumstances may arise, e.g. a family emergency, parents out of town, etc., when a student needs to ride home with another student on a one-time only basis. The student must get off at the assigned stop of the student they are riding with (no exceptions).

Make sure to fill out and turn in the linked Permission Slip to the Campus Admins office no later than 9:00 AM on the requested ride date. Forms can be printed and handed to the Campus Admins Assistant. Hard copies of the form can be picked up from the Campus Admins office if they are needed but must be picked up prior to the day they need to ride a different bus. No emails will be accepted. If there is an emergency, please call the Campus Admins office at 720-554-5155.

CHERRY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL CHERRY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL

Support Power Week: Giving the Power of Play to Kids in Need

Each year, Cherry Creek High School hosts Power Week, a school-wide fundraising effort benefiting Bags of Fun. Bags of Fun provides backpacks filled with games, toys, books, and other comfort items to bring joy (and the Power of Play) to children facing critical, long-term, and life-threatening illnesses.

This year, Cherry Creek High School’s fundraising goal is $67,000. While ambitious, this goal is achievable with the support of our community and we would love for our WMS families to participate!

Ways WMS Families Can Support Power Week

  • Attend the Cherry Creek High School basketball game on Tuesday, February 11 and show your support.

  • Dine out for a cause at the following participating restaurants—each will donate a portion of proceeds to Power Week:

    • February 9: Birdcall (Hampden)

    • February 10: Noodles & Company (Hampden)

    • February 11: Jersey Mike’s

    • February 12: Jet’s Pizza (Holly)

    • February 13: Torchy’s Tacos (Arapahoe)

Additionally, WMS students will have opportunities to support Power Week through school-based activities, including student-led fundraising efforts (more details to come).

Thank you for helping our students make a meaningful impact and bring joy to children who need it most! 💙
