THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - August 29, 2025
THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear HCS Students and Families,
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Ice Cream Social! It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces filling the halls and grounds of HCS. Events like this remind us how special our community is. We loved reconnecting with returning families, welcoming those who are new to our school, and sharing in the excitement of a new school year. Watching students explore their classrooms, meet their teachers, and get a first look at their new spaces was a highlight for us all.
We are looking forward to carrying that same energy into our upcoming Back to School events. These gatherings are a great opportunity to meet more of our staff, connect with other families, and learn more about the many programs and supports that make HCS such a vibrant learning community. You can find the full list of events on our school website as well as in our newsletter.
If you are new to Hinesburg Community School, welcome! We are thrilled to have you join us and know you will find a supportive, engaging, and caring school environment here.
Finally, a quick reminder that there will be no school on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day. We hope you enjoy the long weekend with your family, and we look forward to seeing students back at school the following day, ready for a fantastic year ahead.
With appreciation,
Tim and Alexis

4th GRADERS WORK IN TEAMS TO SOLVE SPATIAL REASONING PUZZLES
MUSIC NEWS FROM MR SMITH
I am thrilled to be joining the faculty at HCS this year as the instrumental music teacher. I have had the pleasure of being in our district since 1997 working at both WCS and CCS.
At HCS we will be offering Advance Band for 7th and 8th graders. This ensemble will meet twice a week for 35 minutes and have a weekly small group lesson.
The Intermediate Band for 6th graders and the Beginning Band for 5th graders will have one full group rehearsal per week and one small group lesson.
Jazz Band will be available for any 6th - 8th grader who wishes to participate. We will meet once a week. Students can sign up for Jazz Band when the ensembles begin their first rehearsals. They simply have to let me know their intentions and I will include them on the roster.
All ensembles and lesson groups will meet during the regularly scheduled school day. Rehearsals and lessons will begin the week of 9/8/25.
A survey was sent to all incoming fifth grade families last spring to sign up for band. If you missed the survey and would like your child to participate in the Beginning Band, please email me at asmith@cvsdvt.org and let me know. All new 5th grade band member families will receive an email from me in the next week detailing how to obtain an instrument.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at asmith@cvsdvt.org or (802) 482 - 6233.
I look forward to a wonderful year in music!
Thank you!
Andy Smith

FOUR WINDS PROGRAM
Volunteer Opportunity in K-4 classrooms with HCS Four Winds:
Want to learn more about nature? Eager to share the joy of discovery with your children and their classmates? Become a Four Winds classroom volunteer at Hinesburg Community School!
Adult volunteers (HCS parents, grandparents, or community members) meet for two hours/month during the school year for a workshop taught by a naturalist from the Four Winds Nature Institute staff. Each month we learn about a fascinating natural science topic with activities designed to teach children in grades K-4. Then, later in the month, two volunteer partners bring these lessons to the classes and take the children outdoors, leading them through the activities.
Our first volunteer training workshop is Friday, September 12th, 8:00-10:00am at HCS.
For more information or to volunteer, please contact Sara Lovitz, Volunteer Program Coordinator at hcsfourwinds@gmail.com

EVERYBODY WINS
After a fantastic first year we are excited to announce that Everybody Wins! Vermont and the Hinesburg Community School will continue their partnership in the 2025/2026 school year.
Do you know someone who can spare an hour a week to connect one-on-one with a student at our school? Reading books, playing games and talking over lunch build meaningful connections and enrich our community. Help us grow the program by spreading the word and contacting Janet Gray if you are interested!
