WEEK ENDING IN 03/04/2022

Dear OSES Families,

As many of you know, OSES was designated as the Most Diverse Public Elementary School in the state of Florida in 2021. Our school is full of different cultures, languages, and beliefs; it’s a big part of what makes us a special place to learn not only from books, but one another.

Clearly there are conflicts taking place in the world that deserve attention. I hope that OSES serves you and your family as a safe spot to express your culture and beliefs. We are grateful not only for the diverse student population, but also the diverse staff that exemplifies different cultures can work together towards a common goal.

Peacefully,

Mr. Singleton

Principal

KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten has had a blast celebrating Read Across America this week by dressing up in lots of fun attire, and listening to/reading different stories.

In Social Studies we have been learning about different types of jobs people do and the tools they use for these jobs. We also have been learning about US currency. In science we are still focusing on force of motion.

Some reminders: Cooler weather is still here. Please make sure your child’s name is written inside of their jacket. We have lots of lost jackets this time of year!

Please also label water bottles as well :)

FIRST

Ms. Yeaman’s class enjoyed learning about perseverance during a read aloud with Ms. Greene

SECOND

Ms. Waugh’s class enjoyed a read-aloud this week with Ms. Greene for Read Across America Week!

They also made working models of the lungs as they learn about the different body parts and their functions in Science.

Ms. Nickerson’s class also made working body parts using paper, string and straws to model how the skeleton and muscles work together to make the hand move.

2nd grade’s 3rd quarter AR party is Thursday, March 10th. Make sure you have earned at least 20 AR points since the start of the 3rd quarter (January 4th) by March 9th to get to the party!

THIRD

Students in Myers’ class worked hard on engineering this week, among other subjects. They test flighted their valentine kite. The challenge was to make a heart shaped kite. In Ms Awadalla’s class, the students just finished the All About Me project to share about their families with her classmates and teacher. Figueroa’s students are finishing up their class book that they are publishing!

FOURTH

This week, Mr. Mateer’s class has been up to a lot. In writing, we’ve been getting support from Mr. Salgado and getting individual, personalized support to make our writing the best it can be! Math is all about area and perimeter. We’re continuing our novel study of Percy Jackson. The best part was everyone getting to dig out their own actual gemstone!

Ms. Michetti's class has been finishing up their Earth Structures class with a cross-curricular narrative writing assignment for student pet rocks. They have loved creating background stories (including physical classifications, types of rocks, and origins) that describe their pet rock character, the setting in which they originate and reside, and character traits for their rock!

FIFTH

Ms. Galans classes are making amazing progress this year. We have finished all 5th grade math and science standards and are focusing on review and finishing 6th grade standards.

For science next week students will be working on fictional animals, their fossil records, adaptations, and branching diagrams.

In Math students are working on understanding inequalities and equations. Math APM scores have been passed out this week for my class.

SIXTH

Mrs. Gajus’ math classes have been making great strides this year! The Pre-Algebra classes have completed 9 of the 11 units of study and will soon be starting a spiral review of all standards taught this year. After our review, students will begin working on some basic Algebra 1 concepts to prepare them for next year. The 6th grade classes have completed 8 of the 10 units of study for their course and will be ready to start their spiral review of all standards once those last units are completed. Students recently took their second math APM assessment. Students will be receiving their score reports soon, once all make-up testing is over. Please be looking out for further information about those reports via email.

S.M.A.R.T Goal in Physical Education

On Saturday February 26, 2022, Mr. Lawrence and Ms. Masuoka completed a 20-mile hike in Fort Christmas in 6 hours and 44 minutes.

This was an implementation of S.M.A.R.T. goal for Ms. M.

In PE class, we have discussed how to set our own S.M.A.R.T. goals. Students saw the progression of 20-mile hike training on the white board.

Students have been setting their lap goals for the Million Miles Challenge to improve their cardiorespiratory endurance.
Last Friday UCF Marine Biology students visited the 6th grade life science classes. The students engaged in learning about the biodiversity of sharks by rotating through stations. The stations included an informational station with drawing sharks with stencils application, question station with a closer look at shark fins, and a relay race to apply and practice knowledge of the sharks. Check out these sharktastic photos!

ENERGY WHIZ

Have you checked out the projects our students created for the Virtual Energy Whiz? We encourage all of our stakeholders to leave comments on the project pages. We do have three Junior Solar Sprint teams but one of their pages is not here. They are working towards the in-person Energy Whiz on April 30th. You can even find our projects on this website from last year’s event! For the April event, we are still accepting students/teams. Please fill out this form if your family is interested.

SUPER STEM THURSDAY

As some of you may know, Super STEM Saturday for OCPS was postponed. They have decided to have the schools hold their own individual events.

On March 10th, we will have a virtual event. The students below were chosen to showcase their work on critter comfort cottage, egg drop, energy inspired art, energy transfer machine, essay and vision board, junior solar sprint, mousetrap car, and/or water bottle rockets. If they choose to participate, they will need to do the following: join the Google Classroom for the event, create a Wakelet about their project and save it to the Super STEM Space, and provide feedback (reactions) to the other projects. The students listed below already have this project competed in the Virtual Energy Whiz or SECME Regionals. Some of these students are encouraged to also compete at Curtis Kinetic Energy Challenge (6th grade at the Science Center in March) and/or the Energy Whiz competition in Cocoa in April. All of our students are welcome to showcase their STEM experiences in this event. For more information, please check out the slide deck.

Here are our students that are invited to showcase their work: Anwita, Aiden (6th), Ajay, Makena, Diya, Deeharr, Atharv, Benjamin, Dhruv (6th), Neil, Akshara, Molina, Anahi, Aiden (4th), Arjun, Anay, Omar, Quinn, Aarini, Aarit, Ramsay, Anishka, and Soha. The students listed that participate will receive a medal and Free Pass to the Orlando Auto Museum (with the purchase of an adult pass.)

If you have any questions about this event or the Energy Whiz in April, please contact Mrs. Trujillo.

TESTING CORNER TESTING CORNER

Students in grades 3rd-6th recently completed the Reading and Math APM assessment. Please keep an eye out for your student’s score report coming home.

This week 3rd grade participated in a practice FSA Reading and 5th grade took their final Science PMA.

On Monday (3/7), 3rd-6th graders will participate in a practice FSA Writing assessment. Be sure your student is well rested and arrives at school on time. Students having to make up assessments are missing his/her regular instruction.

Families in testing grades (3-6) received an email this week about our school’s FSA Parent Information Webinar on March 10th. Please check your Junk Mail if you are interested in attending but did not see the email or reach out to Mrs. Carter at cayce.carter@orlandoscience.org.

Please contact Mrs. Carter at Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org with any questions.
